What the hell?! So disturbing but also kinda funny?

I did not expect this book to really include someone that eats eyes... but it was such a fascinating and unique take. One day Ji-won's mother starts to eat fish eyes for good luck, which triggers something in Ji-won's brain... and lets just say, she develops a new favorite food, especially if it belonged to a man. The ending and especially the way she finished the job was hilarious. The real horror in this book is the way that Ji-won and her sister and mother are being fetishized, so it is really satisfying how she takes revenge.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Clearly something!

This book holds the thoughts and perspectives of a young korean-american girl trapped in an asian fetishizing scene and the bizarre fantasies of her mind. 'The eyes are the best part, they bring good luck.', is what Ji-wons mother said while removing the eyes of the fish on the dinner table. The family longs for good luck, since the sudden abscence of the father. Trying her best to comfort her mother, Ji-won bears to try one fish eye, too. One taste of the fish eye awakens vivid dreams in her. When her mother introduces a new boyfriend, George, her life seem to spiral into this one cocoon of madness, disgust and female rage. A sickening semi-horror novel, not recommended for the weak!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

I would have done the same- I guess.

I am rarely so torn and enthusiastic. The plot begins gently and then very, very quickly becomes a manifesto of female rage. It resembles a feminist horror game, perfect for anyone who wants to try their hand at this genre. Monika Kim told the story so excitinglya and realistically that I was not only able to understand Ji-Won, but also had to actively empathize with her.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    blue eyes everywhere

This book had my jaw on the floor. It's a really fast read, the story is just too gripping to put it down and it makes u want to read everything in one sitting! Ji-won´s world collapses. Her dad leaves her, her mother and her sister alone. Fisheyes were his favorite meal, since they're supposed to bring luck. Hoping that this would fix her life, she dares to eat one of those eyes. But after a few weeks her mother announces her new boyfriend. A white, blue eyed, rich man. This is where Ji-won´s hatred towards men start, but most of all her obsession with blue eyes. A must-read, even though it did get disgusting sometimes (or especially because of that)!!

    Sympathy with the cannibal?

Oh my god. This book was great. I mean it wasn't really a Horror Story, but rather a Thriller, but it was a joy reading it. Like I thought I could never sympathise with a cannibal, but here I am. And those men deserved it. And as the cherry on top, she got away with three murders.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Vile

In her debut novel Monika Kim paints a vivid portrait of a Korean-American family that is about to get shattered. When Ji-Won's mother introduces her new boyfriend George to her daughters while she is just trying to navigate life, grieving her family that was still intact just a couple of months prior, she is confronted with a new gut-wrenchingly gruesome obsession. To compensate for what she cannot have Ji-Won goes on an insatiable but oh so morbid hunt. A macabre and wicked but truly brilliant book.
