Rezension

"What an adventure! Katabasis is a tour de force - literate, witty, and wise, it thrills and delights all the way to a hugely satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed it tremendously." - Gareth Brown, international bestselling author of The Book of Doors

"A philosophical tribute to love, Katabasis is the latest master turn by a master novelist. Under the surface of R.F. Kuang's rigorous treatment of logic and hell is an endless reservoir of vitality and a deep thirst for life. This timeless search for meaning is for any reader struggling to find purpose in a deeply flawed world." - Vaishnavi Patel, New York Times bestselling author of Kaikeyi

"'Katabasis' shines with devastatingly real characters and absorbing world building." - New York Times

"A must-read for fans of Naomi Novik, Olivie Blake, and Lev Grossman's scholastic fantasies, with explorations of purpose, grief, and relationships that open the novel to a more universal audience." - Library Journal (starred review)

"This is a tightly constructed novel that aims a clear lens on academia, with both its faults and its virtues. The heady draw of discovery is ever-present, even if what Alice is discovering is Hell. A learned, literary manifesto on academia-and its darkness."

- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"There can be no other explanation: Kuang is a wizard. Each character, each sentence, each chapter of Katabasis is like an exquisitely crafted incantation that only Kuang herself could have cast. I was ensorcelled from page one, and once I started reading it I found myself unable to think about anything else until long after I turned the final page. That's when I realized that Kuang had me right where she wanted me all along: Completely spellbound... and loving every minute of it." - John Joseph Adams, series editor of Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy

"Rich with allusion and illusion, Kuang crafts a witty, gory, harrowing ride that thoroughly roasts the perils and power structures of academia, while never losing sight of what it means to have a fragile, human heart." - #1 New York Times bestselling author, Leigh Bardugo

"This is a book of ideas, and as such, Kuang's creativity shines, her vehicle for story a prose that's smooth as butter. Katabasis is a formidable, timeless work, destined to be a modern classic." - Olivie Blake, New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six

"A balance of literary deep thinking, pop commercial fun, and outrageous audacity. Kuang uniquely and authentically writes the Academy with the right mix of love and rage." - Rebecca Roanhorse, New York Times bestselling author

"Wickedly sharp and unexpectedly sweet, going to hell has never been this entertaining." - Shannon Chakraborty, New York Times bestselling author of The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi

"A spellbinding and poignant story that had me riveted to the pages, R.F. Kuang's KATABASIS is more than a novel to savor. This book is an experience. I envy those who get to read it for the first time."

- Rebecca Ross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divine Rivals

    A Hell of a Book

Katabasis was a wonderful mix of weird and intriguing. I loved the depth of the characters and their individual backstories. I also liked the magic system and the academic setting. The story realistically depicts the problems that alot of women in STEM face.

I liked it more than I thought

Considering all the negative things I have heard about this book (it makes you feel dumb; you have to had read books xyz to understand it etc.) I really enjoyed it. Personally I think the author considered that not everyone has read certain books (dantes inferno) and thus actually explains it all within the book. The characters have great development throughout the book and I actually quite liked their banter, plus this isnt marketed or meant to be a romance so it didnt actually bother me that I wasnt really interested in that department. Overall 4.5 Stars /5 Stars It has to be said that this was my first book from R.F Kuang, but I will definitly pick up more of her backlog now.

    Not bad

For me, Katabasis was the least good of all the R. F. Kuang's books. But it was still enjoyable most of the time. The setting was interesting and the characters were mostly likable.

    For the Babel Fans

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang promises Dark Academia elements, a trip to hell and mostly unlikeable characters (which is one of many things I love about Kuang's books) - and we get all that! I think this novel is for the Babel Lovers, the Dark Academia Readers who love social commentary and critique. Also the commentary on power dynamics and exploitation in academia was very fascinating. I really liked the philosophical approach and the complex layers that this story provides. If you are looking for a fast paced, actionpacked fantasy novel this might not be the one for you. But if you enjoy slow, intricate storytelling, layered characters and an excursion in deeper waters then this one is most definitely for you. The only thing that I would have liked more of was a more detailed description of hell, because it was so interesting and fascinating to me.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    "Hell is a campus."

    R. F. Kuang shows her talent for writing academia and demonstrates her knowledge about mythology once again. I really loved Babel and Yellowface, so this was a very nice addition to her previous books in terms of style and philosophical/literary themes, mixed together with a nice and subtle love-subplot. The mental strain and the workload of academia were heavily referenced, which evoked great sense of empathazing with the characters. The only problem I have with this book were the few passages that kept dragging a bit, mainly because of the complex concepts that were referenced. But it was overall still a very fun reading experience and felt so interesting to dive into the complex but compelling magical system.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    Philosophical, academic and fantastic

4.5 stars Katabasis is definitely not a super easy read - It's not just a story in an academic setting, the academia is *very* present but that is also one half of the reason I liked it so much. The other half would be the characters - everyone from our main characters to who they interact with in hell has their own goals, convictions and philosophies and thus feels like their own interesting person. The 0.5 star detraction is because - probably also due to the very academic tone, and Alice being Alice - I couldn't quite fall into the emotions of the story a hundred percent.
