One Dark Window the gothic and spellbinding million-copy bestseller

Cover und Titel Beides passt irgendwie nicht ganz zur Geschichte, wobei ich sagen muss, dass der Titel schon sehr ansprechend ist und mich direkt mehr wissen wollen hat lassen. Der Subtitel "The Shepherd King" passt schon eher. Geschichte, Charaktere und Schreibstil Magie hat immer ihren Preis. Im Normalfall ist dies der Wahnsinn oder ein schneller körperlicher Zerfall. Doch Elspeth Spindle wurde als Kind von Magie berührt und hat bisher unversehrt überlebt, obwohl sie eine junge Erwachsene ist. Doch sie trägt ein Geheimnis in sich: In ihrem Land gibt es magische Karten, deren Nutzung im Vergleich zu anderer Magie erlaubt ist; doch als Elspeth die Karte des Albtraums berührte, wurde sie mit dem Monster verbunden und der Albtraum wohnt seither heimlich in ihr und spricht mit Elspeth. Meist in magischen Rätseln und kryptischen Warnungen. Ein Besuch im Schloss, zu dem Elspeth mit ihrer Familie antreten muss, da ihre Cousine mit dem Kronprinzen verlobt wurde, gerät immer mehr außer Kontrolle und Elspeth wird tiefer in das Reich der Karten sowie in ein Komplott gegen den König und zur Vervollständigung des Kartensets gezogen. Doch Magie hat immer ihren Preis ... Der Auftakt war wahnsinnig spannend und das Ende hat mich dann doch überrumpelt. Ich bin sehr froh, auf der Originalsprache, English, gelesen zu haben, da die Gedichte zu Kapitelanfang und auch im Text einfach hervorragend waren und die Stimmung getragen haben! Abgesehen von den vielen Baumarten (die ich auch auf Deutsch nicht kannte ), absolut genial und gut lesbar! Mein Fazit Ich gebe eine klare Leseempfehlung für alle Fans von Märchen und düsterer Fantasy und glatte 5 Sterne für diesen Dilogie-Auftakt!

Dieses Buch stand schon echt lang auf meiner Merkliste und ich bin so unglaublich froh, dass ich es endlich gelesen habe und ich bereue es richtig so lange damit gewartet zu haben, denn es war wirklich episch und düster und ich hab es nur so weggelesen!! Rachel Gillig entführt einen in diesem Buch in eine düstere Welt, in der jeder der Magie besitzt sofort getötet wird, weil die einzige erlaubte, und laut dem König richtige Magie, die Magie der Karten ist. Es gibt zwölf unterschiedliche Kartenarten mit unterschiedlichen Seltenheitsgraden und Fähigkeiten. Aber nichts kommt ohne Preis. Jede Karte fordert einen Tribut für ihre Magie. Das Königreich wird seit Jahrhunderten bedroht und das Land nimmt stetig ab. Die einzige Lösung ist das alle Karten des Decks zu vereinen, indem eine Karte jeder Art zusammen gebracht wird. Das ist natürlich das erklärte Ziel des Königs und aller Könige die vor ihm da waren haben dies ebenfalls bereits versucht. Elspeth Spindel ist eine sehr interessante Protagonistin, denn ihr Kopf gehört nicht allein ihr. Sie hat eine Art gruseligen Mitbewohner und sollte sich eigentlich verstecken, damit niemand ihr Geheimnis und damit ihre Magie entdeckt, aber dann wird sie ausgerechnet von dem Mann entdeckt der ihr Erzfeind sein sollte. Die Charaktere sind alle sehr komplex und besonders “ the Nightmare” ist wirklich beängstigend interessant. Der Schreibstil verleiht der Handlung einen schönen gruseligen Schliff und ist einfach unglaublich fesselnd zu lesen gewesen. Die unglaubliche Welt die hier erschaffen wurde, hat natürlich ihr übriges zu einem unvergesslichen Leseerlebnis beigetragen, und ich muss einfach weiterlesen. Eine große Empfehlung für diese Buch!

The setting of this book is really inventive and the magic system is also really creative. The story is dark, mysterious and not predictable! I love the characters and the development of relationships between them. At some points I had to pause reading because the tension was so great. I highly recommend this book. One of my favourites now!!!

"One dark Window" is the fantastic beginning of the Shepard King duology by Rachel Gillig. For eleven years the voice haunted Elsebeth in her head every day. She is one of the few children who survived the fever, that gave her forbidden magic powers. No one knows of her abilities until she meets the king´s nephew and his family. Togther they try to save the kingdom by collecting all of the magic cards and making an end to the forbidden magic. An absolut banger of a book! I was hooked since page one, and couldn´t put it down until the end. Definitely one of the best romantasy novels I´ve read thus far. Full of mystic, magic and little bit of romance. Huge recommendation!
