  "The Bone Season" is a clever genre-mix of fantasy, dystopia and sci-fi. Samantha Shannon's debut novel takes the reader into the criminal underworld of a dystopian London and its clairvoyants - people who can "see" spirits and auras. The amazing characters guide you through a gripping plot that gains depth as soon as the main protagonist Paige is forced to leave London and is enhanced by the sci-fi element of the Rephaim. A wonderful series that I can't recommend highly enough!

  The Sea Spinner

  The second book in the Reign of Remnants triology leads Rhya to the Water Court and on a journey of healing after the events of book one. Rhyas development is one of the best I've read in a long time and the cliffhanger is one of my favourites - even if it leaves you completely devastated. Johnson keeps the reader emotionally involved in the story throughout the whole book and not many authors have managed to do that for me recently. I love the plot and where it's leading and can't wait for the third installment in the series!

  A group of criminals and liars have been chosen for a mission to kill the king. Each of the characters has a personal motiv to see the task through and is determened to fulfil it at all costs. The narrative shifts between all these characters as they navigate through the betrayals and alliances this mission entails. It's a story about right and wrong, betrayal and trust in a Korean-inspired world. Mai Corland seems to have no trouble weaving six narrative perspectives into a single story that captivates with its interesting characters and fantastic world-building.

  Emmerich ermittelt in diesem sehr gut recherchierten ersten Band der Reihe auf sehr unkonventionelle, aber dennoch menschliche Art und Weise. Die Charaktere können überzeugen und auch der Fall bleibt bis zum Ende spannend. Eine große Empfehlung für jeden der (historische) Krimis liebt!

  A Day of Fallen Night

  If you loved Priory of the Orange Tree you're going to devour this book. The story is set about 500 year before Priory and follows characters from different kingdoms whos fates are intervened as they are all affected by the eruption of the Dreadmount and the awakening of the Great Western and their wyverns and beasts. Shannon has a vivid and complex writing style which I already loved in the first book of this series. It's a story about finding your true self and love in all the shapes it can take. The characters have to go on a journey to selfdiscovery, selflove and acceptance and the author adresses a great number of important topics from grief and motherhood to sexuality and social expectations/norms and covers them beautifully. If you haven't read Priory yet you could start reading this series with A day of fallen night or Priory of the Orange Tree. Or you could start with her novella Among the burning flowers as the story interlocks with the beginning of Priory. I actually loved this book even more that Priory and and I’d already considered that one phenomenal.

  The Ballad of Falling Dragons

  The second book in this series is going to destroy you in the best way possible. The plot unfolds beautifully as we get more answers about some open plotpoints of book one. The characters develop naturally and and the new ones fit perfect into the story. I really liked the (heartbreaking) diary entries as they add an unexpected element to the plot. The Scavenger King is now officially one of my favourite villains - every time he turned up I hated him even more and his own pov only added to that hate. While we're on that subject: I loved the different points of view, because each one brings more depth and context to the plot, drawing you even further into this world. After the heart-wrenching ending to this amazing novel we hopefully won't have to wait too long for the next book.

  Ragpicker King - Die Chroniken von Castellan

  Für mich war dieser zweite Band der Reihe ein absolutes Highlight. Cassandra Clare gibt den Charakteren noch mehr Tiefe, auf die Beziehungen zwischen den Charakteren wird noch mehr eingegangen und Handlungsstränge hinzugefügt, die dann in drei unglaublichen Kapitel zusammengeführt werden, die die LeserInnen dann auch noch mit einem Cliffhanger zurück lassen. Die Handlung nimmt schnell Fahrt auf, wird immer komplexer und auch an Plottwists wird nicht gespart - gefühlt ändern sich die Machtverhältnisse und Allianzen alle paar Seiten. Ich konnte das Buch nicht aus der Hand legen und fand es sogar noch besser als den ersten Band, der mich schon begeistert hat.

  The Raven Scholar

  A spectacular epic fantasy and also a fantastic murder mystery. The scholar Neema works at the palace, but is drawn into the competition of winning the throne of Orrun, as the emperor has to abdicate after 24 years of rule by imperial law. After one of the eight competitors for the succession is murdered Neema is tasked with finding the murderer and also taking the place of the victim in the competition. I loved the combination of murder mystery and deadly competition interwoven with the element of sacred animals that only show their real power at the games and cause some surprises. The world-building, characters and plot draw you right in and Hodgson's writing style makes this a fantasy book I couldn’t put down.

  A Discovery of Witches - Die Seelen der Nacht

  Die Geschichte um die Hexe und Historikerin Diana und den Vampir und Wissenschaftler Matthew hat mich ricvhtig begeistert. Man merkt beim Lesen sehr schnell, dass die Autorin im Vorhinein sehr viel recherchiert haben muss, denn sie erwähnt sehr viele reale historische Ereignisse, Personen und wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse. Auch die Charaktere sind sehr gut ausgearbeitet und mit Diana haben wir auch endlich einmal wieder eine eine ältere (Anfang 30) Hauptfigur. Ebenso ist die sich langsam entwickelnde Beziehung zwischen den Hauptfiguren sehr erfrischend, da beide sehr viel Wert auf Kommunikation und Ehrlichkeit legen. Deborah Harkness lässt sich Zeit mit dem Aufbau der Geschichte und so hat das Buch im Allgemeinen zwar eine langsamere Handlung, aber dafür wurde diese perfekt ausgearbeitet und auch die Beziehungen zwischen den einzelnen Charakteren können sich glaubhaft entwickeln. Durch deren Komplexität macht es zusätzlich noch mehr Spaß in diese Welt einzutauchen. Eine absolute Empfehlung und ich freue mich schon darauf den zweiten Band zu beginnen.

  Shield of Sparrows

  Shield of Sparrows is one of the best books I've read so far this year and I really didn't expect that as most of the booktok books just aren't for me. Devney Perrys story about a princess who was ment to stay in the shadows only to become a wife for political gains, a spy and a survivor. The story captivates right from the beginning with great storytelling and fantastic multi-layered characters. The ending was crazy and I can't stop thinking about it and this book!
