Summary:
Oraya’s family was killed in a vampire attack on her village when she was very young.
Vincent, the Nightborn vampire king, found her and couldn’t bring himself to leave the small, helpless human child behind. He adopted her and raised her as his own. He taught her how to fight, kill, and survive in a world that is cruel and deadly to humans. However, no matter how much she trains or how smart and resilient she becomes, she is still human, and Vincent is constantly afraid for her life. It will be impossible for her to rule alongside her father as the mere human she is.
Once every century, a legendary tournament is held. The winner is granted one favor by Nyaxia, the goddess of death herself. This is Oraya’s one chance to become something more, but winning won't be easy among the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. She soon realizes that she needs to form an alliance to win the competition, but that won’t be easy because her father has always taught her never to trust a vampire. With things getting hazy, Oraya has no choice but to team up with Rhain, a vampire from another house who seems to be the lesser evil compared to the other competitors.
Opinion:
This book introduced me to Carissa Broadbent, and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
It’s a blend of The Hunger Games (games and trials), Underworld (a vampire king and his rebellious, fearless daughter), and Romeo and Juliet (lovers from warring families).
The world-building is incredible and woven nicely into the story. The more you read, the more you learn about the realm of Obitraes, its three vampire houses, and its politics. Sadly, you also learn about the standing that humans have in this world. The atmosphere is dark and gothic, and I was quickly glued to the pages by the writing style. I found myself emotionally involved in no time.
The book strikes a perfect balance between character development, world-building, and plot progression. It’s the perfect introduction to a series of six books.
The characters are each magnetic in their own right, and the dynamics are crafted excellently.
Ilana is only a minor character with very little on-page time, yet she is very memorable. I could picture her perfectly, and I was a bit disappointed not to read more about her. She has an absolutely wicked and intriguing air about her. She had a significant emotional impact at the beginning of the story.
Vincent is the perfect vampire king. He’s powerful, ruthless, mysterious, and charismatic. I found myself drawn to his character, wanting to learn more about the man behind his cold mask of indifference. If it were up to me, there would be more content about him, with a deeper dive into his motivations. When it comes to him, an itch wasn’t scratched enough. At times, I was more invested in Vincent and Oraya’s story than in Oraya and Rhain’s.
Mische, Rhain’s best friend, is a ray of sunshine amidst the trials’ darkness. She’s fierce and absolutely adorable, and she made the trials much more interesting and entertaining.
Oraya embodies many qualities I look for in a heroine. She’s brave, smart, resilient, and has an intact moral compass. I really enjoyed the rogue aspect of her character. She’s a bit like the Dark Knight: out there, but never seen, exercising justice against vampires and protecting the weak and helpless. There are so many layers to her character. I felt deeply connected to her and what she was going through.
Although Raihn is introduced as yet another strong and brutal vampire, he’s nothing of the sort. I loved getting to know him better and discovering all his different layers. He’s also very swoon-worthy. Like, top book boyfriend material.
The pacing is quite fast. The romance was angsty and a delicious slow burn. The development of the relationship is authentic. There’s a beautiful mix of banter and heartbreaking honesty between Oraya and Rhain, and I found myself fully immersed in their story. I could really feel their love and the complexity of their emotions.
While some of the ending was predictable, some of it surprised me. I shed quite a few tears once the plot thickened.
I'm thankful that I started reading this series after the second book two was released. Otherwise, I would have been tearing my hair out waiting for more to feed my newly developed addiction and book one ends on a nasty cliffhanger. Consider yourself warned!

“So many mistakes in the end,” he choked out. “Never you.”

I can't tell you when this book became part of my personality.. but it did and I can't even complain about it. Not a day goes by where I don't think about "The Serpent" at least once. It's just so good! I'm not a huge fan of vampire novels and I hadn't read one in years, maybe that's why I was so positively surprised by this one. Though I gotta admit that none of the plottwists surprised me but it was a joy to read nonetheless!
