I love the book

Bewertung am 25.10.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2635919

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

I already read the book like three times, some say they don't like the style of how it's written, but that's exactly why I love it. The story of Osamu Dazai is one I can relate too (also a reason I like it), mostly because I also strtuggle with not undestanding why I exist and depression, so it's like reading about someone with the same problems. It's playing in a time where misogyni was much more normalised, so some readers may not like that. I personally see it as just a part of the time where Osamu lived. To the book itself, it's in a melancholic tone and as someone whos native language isn't english, it's more advanced. You follow his story, from childhood 'till his death. There're many timeskips, so some times it's hard to follow. He tells about his struggles and how he doesn't undestands people, but still is popular (for some time). He tries to mask it (his problems to understand people), but many think he's weird. I personally can totally recommed the book. It's very intresting to read, you completly go into the life of someone else, who struggles with being a human and not knowing how to act around others. And having a addiction because of his depression. All around many aspects and layers to read into.

Beautifully painful read

One of (if not the) most relatable books I've ever read. I have never felt more understood in my life and the book manager to put many experiences and feelings into words that I couldn't have dreamt of expressing myself. I can only recommend it, especially if you have (or are) struggling with the feeling of being an outcast, though it will make you experience it all over again and make you cry (speaking from experience) :)

"Mine has been a life of much shame"

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Osamu Dazai's book "No Longer Human" is semi-autobiographical, written about a young man Oba Yozo. I've read one of Dazai's books "Blue Bamboo" a while back and did a deep dive on the author. The author is, by no means, a good person but someone who obviously struggled a lot with his health and mental in post-war Japan. A lot of events Yozo describes have happened to Dazai himself, a failed double suicide for example (something he did with his first wife). It was so fascinating to read and connect pieces of Yozo's life with that of Dazai's. Despite the outdated view of women and sex-workers and the world in general, I enjoyed the book a lot and it shows why it's still a bestseller in Japan.

Thought provoking japanese classic

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

„No longer human“ is one of a kind experience you don’t want to live through yourself. An autobiographical novel about Dazai himself and his last complete work before his suicide. Yozo, our main character, struggles with a couple of things in life, but mostly with trying to find the meaning of his existence and the reason why he is alive. He alienates himself more and more from humanity and struggles to find a real purpose. He sees himself as a failure and isn’t capable of understanding other human beings. It’s a japanese classic. The translation was beautiful even though i cannot guarantee that it was accurate. To round it out here is one of my favorite quotes of the book: “Mine has been a life of much shame.I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being.“
