Kuang knows how to write addicting books. With the parellels to chinese history and the troubles and dangers of war, she creates a world, where you can´t trust anyone. The fantasy aspect was well done and I can´t wait to continue the series. Check Triggerwarnings!

Cut right to my emotions and made me cry. So good!

Poppy War follows the story of Rin, a poor girl raised by her aunt and uncle and work in their shop. When she grows old enogh they plan to marry her off, but Rin has diffrent plans. She wants to study. So she cuts off sleep and crams her head full with information to test her knowledge at the natinal wide test called the Keju. Only the best will get a place at the military school. The best there is. Her life changes when she chooses a disciplin frowned upon. - Lore. Little did they - and she knew- that Rin has the potential to be a shaman. A magic wielder. Her life has never been easy, not in the rooster province not at school and definitly not on the nattlefield when they are fighting in the Poppy War. Reading this book was difficult. the story good, the brutality a lot. This book is not for the lighthearted. But absolutly worth reading

Incredible worldbuilding, unique, flawed characters and a cruel war. A must for fantasy fans who can set romance aside.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

"Now what was that?" was my first thougt after finishing The Poppy War.

This book left me behind very confused and I think I´ll have to read the other two first before I can give a definite opinion on this series. It was quite action packed of course with a lot of bloody details when it comes to describing massacres and corpses (so maybe a trigger warning would´ve been adequate. There are also explicit mentions of rape and abuse towards the end) and it had quite a few twists that gave the story completely new turns on some corners. It was good in the way it´s got many morally dark grey characters that are very flawed and human despite their shaman abilities to communicate and host gods. This book is heavy. It´s focus lies, as the title indicates, on the third Poppy War and you should know that that´s REALLY the whole focus before going in. It´s dark and brutal but an interesting read that will leave you with twisted emotions.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

"Was she now a godess or a monster? Perhaps neither. Perhaps both."

This book is one of a kind. I was so immersed while reading it that I completely forgot everything around me. R. F. Kuang crafted this world and it's characters with so much care and the result is an epic fantasy with many different layers. I really liked that there is more than one typical story arc that our main character Rin goes trough. In the beginning she's an outsider/underdog who trains hard but also finds out she has a special gift. But then in the second part of the book the world around her dramatically changes and she has to rely on her own instincts and powers while she also finds friends that are like her. But don't be fooled: Rin is no heroine and her choices leave you wondering: Is she a godess or a monster?

The Poppy War made me speechless

Wow! This was an amazing start and introduction to this trilogy! The writing is stunning. The world is cruel and brutal, the characters are unreliable and will get on your nerves. The magic is fabulous, the mythology aspect is beautiful. I also really enjoyed the historical setting very much. This book gripped my attention from page 1 and I was on the edge of my seat until I finished it. It was thrilling, it had me screaming, it made me cry and angry and I felt so much for the characters, even though they were kind of annoying, especially Rin is definitely an unlikable main character and I am so happy she is the way she is because she fits the story perfectly. I am enjoying how unpredictable this plot and the characters were, and I will definitely continue with this series, because book one was simply one of the best books I ever read. This deserves all the hype it is getting. Bravo! 5 out of 5 Stars for this masterpiece!

    Grimdark Fantasy masterfully done!

I usually don't gravitate towards reading grimdark fantasy, but as The Poppy War has been praised by readers all around I had to give it a try! And I do not regret it a bit! The writing was straightforward, but it had a strangely beautiful rhythm to it - I was immediately drawn into the story. The magic system was very unique, as it's based on Shamanism, meditating and/or fast-tracking it by taking opioids. The author amazingly conveyed how a power like this comes with a huge price: by losing your humanity, ethics and clear mind. Another aspect I adored about the writing was how well constructed the main character was. She was very ambigious with understandable goals, but morally questionable decisions and actions. You root for her, but at the same time hate her. You clearly feel for her struggles and craving for power, but you also see the destruction she evokes with her actions. Overall such a good read, but with some heavy subject matter so only read it if you are in a headspace for it!
