The Vegetarian A Novel

Han Kangs Roman hat mich zum Nachdenken angeregt, verstört und gebannt. Daher habe ich dieses Buch auch innerhalb von 2 Tagen beendet. Die Story teilt sich in 3 Teile: Ehemann, Schwager und Schwester. Zudem geht es um generationsübergreifendes Trauma, Sexuelle Gewalt und mentale Gesundheit. Der Roman hat sich nicht nur echt angefühlt, sondern vor allem so erschreckend lebendig. Die Träume und Visionen der Hauptprotagonistin und die Wahrheit hinter all dem wird erst gegen Ende des Romans deutlich. Da ich nicht zu viel spoilern möchte, endet meine Rezension hier. Ich besorge mir gleich einen weiteren ihrer Romane.

Der Roman ist keine Geschichte über Vegetarismus, sondern viel mehr eine Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Druck, Geschlechterrollen, patriarchaler Gewalt und dem Streben nach Freiheit - auch auf Kosten der eigenen Existenz. Das Buch ist in 3 Teile gegliedert, die jeweils aus einer anderen Perspektive erzählt werden. Die Protagonistin ist Yeong-hye, eine südkoreanische Frau, die sich entschließt vegetarisch/vegan zu leben. Wir erfahren allerdings sehr wenig über ihre Beweggründe und Gedanken, da das Buch nie aus ihrer Perspektive erzählt wird. Der erste Teil wird vom Ehemann der Protagonistin geschildert. Durch die Verwendung der Ich-Perspektive kommt es in Gewaltszenen immer wieder zur Täter-Opfer-Umkehr, die eine starke Diskrepanz zwischen Recht und Unrecht auslöst. Ich musste das Buch einige Male weglegen, da die gewaltvollen Szenen schwer zu ertragen waren. Im zweiten Teil liegt der Fokus auf der obsessiven Besessenheit des Schwagers der Protagonistin. Es gipfelt in sinnlicher aber auch grenzüberschreitender Kunst und in erotischer Obsession vom Schwager an der Protagonistin. Der dritte Teil handelt von der Schwester der Protagonistin, die versucht sich im Familienchaos zurecht zu finden und dabei beginnt ihre eigene Rolle in dieser Dynamik zu finden und zu hinterfragen. Das Ende ist offen und auch verstörend und lässt einem mit vielen Fragen, die stark zum Nachdenken anregen, zurück. Ein außergewöhnliches Buch, das zutiefst verstörend aber auch ein literarisch starkes Werk darstellt. Definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven.

Han Kang's "The Vegetarian" is a story about power, obsession and the fight for and/or against life. Yong-Hye is plagued by dreams of blood and gore and the only thing that seemingly keeps the dreams away is becoming vegetarian. Her family does not seem to understand her decisions and they all fight against Yong-Hye in their way. Yong-Hye is never able to explain herself as the plot is told by her husband, her brother-in-law and her sister. None of them are able to control her and their own urges and thus, symmetrical to Yong-Hye, they all fall in to their own obsession of "saving" her without considering her. "The Vegetarian" shows the deeply disturbing depths of humanity and the fragility of the human psyche. The novel is a dream-like tragedy that invokes a feeling of helplessness. In my opinion, the novel is a masterwork, leaving the reader with the same feeling of obsession and insanity as the protagonists.

I could not start reading. It was kind of bizarre and you did not know what’s about to happen once you turn the page. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Still I’m wondering, what was really going on with Yeong-hye. Exciting read!

She is the embodiment of the average person. Married to a man out of practical reasons and working at an office. Neither is she pretty nor is she ugly. She is living an absolutely average life in South Korea. One day seemingly out of the blue she decides to stop eating meat. Her behavior gets weirder every day. Her family thinks her completely crazy and admits her to an asylum after she tried to kill herself at a family occasion. From this point on Han Kangs’ story “the vegetarian” becomes more and more absurd, grotesque and at times even disgusting. The line between normality and insanity blurs and in the end you won’t even know for yourself what’s “normal” anymore. Kang persuades with a great spelling style that reminds of Kafka. A story with great depths and a lot of surprises. A story you’ve been waiting for without knowing it.
