The Handmaid's Tale

Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is a gripping page-turner that keeps readers on edge with its haunting dystopian world and relentless suspense. The emotional depth of the characters makes it impossible not to form a deep connection with their struggles and hopes, drawing readers further into the story. Das Buch ist zwar schon älter aber immer noch furchtbar. Junge Frauen die an - oft alte - Männer geliehen werden, damit sie für diese und ihre Ehefrauen Kinder bekommen. Recht glaubhaft erzählt. Achtung, man könnte Albträume davon bekommen… Ein Klassiker, nicht ohne Grund.

In a dystopian not so faraway future, Offred is a handmaid, one of the last fertile women in this society. As such, she is assigned to one officer to mate, conceive and carry out a child. The officers are often married but since their women cannot reproduce it falls under the duty of the bright-red dressed handmaids to repopulate the civilisation. She is treated well as long as she is able to fulfill her duty but always under the threat to be exiled to the feared and brutal colonies the moment she is no longer useful to society. Margaret Atwood's „The Handmaid's Tale“ contains the story of the handmaid Offred but also of her memories before the regime took away women's rights and put her in the position she now is in - memories of her husband Luke and her daughter whose name is never revealed. One cannot tell much more as to not to spoiler the story of Offred too much. Atwood created a dystopia which is a possible reality in the future, for the fight for women's rights is not over yet, and what was already archieved could be taken away again if each and everyone of us is not careful about it. This handmaid's tale should sink deep into every woman young or old and I highly recommend reading this book!

If you want to experience women's rage and find yet another reason to be angry at the systems built by and for men read this book. The book shows just how terrifyingly close our reality can come to the dystopia inside its pages. It’s a warning not just fiction.

Einfach ein fesselndes Buch, das jeder gelesen haben sollte. Durch die Wortwahl wird das Buch sozusagen in einen hineingebrannt und lässt nicht mehr los. Ich las dieses Buch gerade, als in Amerika das Abtreibungsverbot beschlossen wurde und musste feststellen, dass Atwood mit diesem dystopischen Roman vielleicht gar nicht so Unrecht hatte, als sie ihn geschrieben hat.
