Meine letzte Rezension Watch Me von Tahereh Mafi
»Watch Me« is the highly anticipated sequel for the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. When this book was announced, I had high expectations and with the first few snippets of the book being revealed months before its actual release I was hyped. I still remember reading the original series during quarantine two years ago and reading this book was the ultimate, well crafted throwback I needed right now. It takes place ten years after the grand rebellion in »Imagine Me«, the sixth installment of the popular 'YA Dystopia' book series. (slight spoiler ahead, but you really should not be checking out this review if you haven't read the original series anyway) This time however, we follow James, the youngest brother of the notorious Anderson blood line. He is now 21 and finds himself in a terribly tricky situation, while he is supposed to get information out of Rosabella, an assassin who works for the remainders of the Reestablishment. With the undeniable chemistry between them, as well as James' wit and loads of bickering between him and the now grown up Warner, Kenji, Kent and even Winston, this book was a true delight of a read and will likely be one of the most entertaining ones of this year.

Watch Me

»Watch Me« is the highly anticipated sequel for the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi. I still remember reading the original series during quarantine two years ago and reading this book was the ultimate, well crafted throwback I needed right now. It takes place ten years after the grand rebellion in »Imagine Me«, the sixth installment of the popular 'YA Dystopia' book series. (slight spoiler ahead, but you really should not be checking out this review if you haven't read the original series anyway) This time however, we follow James, the youngest brother of the notorious Anderson blood line. He is now 21 and finds himself in a terribly tricky situation, while he is supposed to get information out of Rosabella, an assassin who works for the remainders of the Reestablishment. With the undeniable chemistry between them, as well as James' wit and loads of bickering between him and the now grown up Warner, Kenji, Kent and even Winston, this book was a true delight of a read and will likely be one of the most entertaining ones of this year.

    Every Exquisite Thing

    When I first stumbled upon this book it was the cover which spoke to me - ironic considering how important beauty is for this story. I then read the blurb and immediately knew I had to give it a try. Not only is this book a combination of 3 genres I did not know I needed to read together, which would be thriller with a hint of crime, gothic romance and sapphic novels. No, it is a reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Gray, which is a masterpiece by itself. Given this and the fact that this book starts with a “bang” which throws one right into the plot, one immediately gets drawn into the story and the mysteries it covers. The plot follows Penny, who, just like her mother who is a famous model, attends the notorious acting academy called “Dorian”. It’s an elite drama school which only the best can attend. And as Penny questions herself and her talent, she discovers the dark secrets of her school while finding out about her own identity and past - something her mother prefers to remain a secret. This book was an absolute reading highlight of this year and I am more than excited for other people to discover it in the future!

    A Study in Drowning

    A Study in Drowning war bereits im englischen Original enorm erfolgreich. Dabei liebten die LeserInnen den Titel entweder, oder taten sich damit schwer. Ich persönlich war vom deutschen Leseexemplar begeistert! Vorausgesetzt der Schreibstil der Autorin wurde bei der deutschen Übersetzung getroffen, so gefiel er mir enorm. Die Geschichte war spannend, und interessant - der Plot zudem originell. Das Buch sticht hier durch den zunächst nicht ganz offensichtlichen Fantasy Anteil enorm aus dem "Meer aus Fantasy Neuerscheinungen" heraus. Daher ist es wichtig als LeserIn zu wissen, dass dies hier kein typischer 'Fae Romantasy' Roman ist, wie sie gerade so häufig vorkommen, sondern mehr in Richtung Urban Fantasy geht, bei dem der Romance Anteil zwar da, allerdings nicht die Priorität des Buches ist. Zu den Charakteren: Effy war eine liebenswürdige Protagonistin und auch Preston mochte ich wahnsinnig gerne! Um jedoch mehr über die beiden herauszufinden, muss man dann doch um Buch greifen. Ich kann "A Study in Drowning" nur wärmstens empfehlen!

    Was die Toten bewegt (Eine packende und atmosphärische Nacherzählung von Edgar Allan Poes Klassiker „Der Untergang des Hauses Usher“)

    Was die Toten bewegt, war bereits im Original (What Moves the Dead) eines meiner absoluten Literaturhighlights! T. Kingfisher hat einen unglaublich guten und faszinierenden Schreibstil, der auch in der deutschsprachigen Übersetzung perfekt zur Geltung kommt! Mit einem schaurig-spannenden Plot folgt man dem Protagonisten Alex durch mysteriöse Geschehnisse, alsbald man merkt, dass deren Ursprung doch nicht so unerklärbar ist, wie Alex ursprünglich denkt. Dieses Buch ist ein absolutes Muss für alle LiebhaberInnen von Gothic Novels, die den gewissen Spannungsfaktor lieben und brauchen. Eine absolute Empfehlung von mir!

    Geheimnisse des Nil, Band 1 - What the River Knows

    Ich hatte zunächst keine Erwartungen. Tatsächlich war es das Cover, das mich ansprach. Ab dem Moment, in dem ich anfing "What the River Knows" zu lesen, konnte ich nicht mehr aufhören. Denn das Buch hat die perfekte Mischung aus Abenteuer und Romantik. Die Chemie zwischen Inez und Whit, und vor allem ihr Geplänkel brachten mich zum Schmunzeln. Gleichzeitig waren das Setting in der Wüste Ägyptens und die Archäologie-Komponente absolut magisch. Zum Plot: Nachdem Inez Eltern vor ungefähr einem Jahr verstorben sind, begibt sie sich auf den Weg nach Ägypten um dem Brief ihres Onkels zu folgen und die Wahrheit über den Tod ihrer Eltern zu erforschen. Dabei funkt es auf der Suche nach Cleopatras Ruhestätte zwischen Whit, dem Assistenten ihres Onkels, und Inez gewaltig. Ich kann das Buch wärmstens an alle empfehlen, die einen originellen und gleichermaßen spanmnenden Liebesroman lesen wollen, bei dem man fast vergisst, dass man gerade ein Buch liest.

    The Hollow Places

    DAS Jahreshighlight von 2024, Für mich zählt T. Kingfisher bereits seit Jahren zu meinen absoluten LieblingsautorInnen. Dementsprechend bin ich absolut begeistert darüber, dass ihre Bücher jetzt nach und nach übersetzt werden, zumal der Schreibstil der Autorin jedes Mal perfekt getroffen wird. The Hollow Places ist ein gruseliger Roman, der trotz der Thriller Elemente durch viel Humor ein angenehmes Gefühl vermittelt. Perfekt für alle, die gerne ins Thriller Genre eintauchen wollen, allerdings einen sanften Einstieg brauchen. 5/5

    Caraval

    Dive into the magical universe created by Stephanie Garber. »Caraval« is the first book of this trilogy. For the plot we follow Scarlett Dragna, the older one of two sisters who has been writing letters to the grand Caraval master Legend, a powerful magician who used to host annual games of illusions and magic. Her wish: for Legend and his performers to travel to Trisda, the home island of Scarlett and Donatella, so they can experience Caraval for Tella's birthday. When Scarlett is supposed to get married, she changes her mind and distinctly asks that he shall not invite them this year, as it would be more than incovenient with her wedding her wedding being around the corner. It is then that two of the sought-after tickets are sent to her. Together with her sister and the wity sailor Julian, Scarlett (if involuntarily) travels to Isla de los Sueños to take part in Caraval. Will she be able to look through the illusions of the game and trust her sanity and heart? For me this book series was a huge highlight of 2023 and I can highly recommend it to anyone who adores Urban Fantasy, mixed with magical elements and a bit of romance! Stephanie Garber has a beautiful, descriptive writing style which makes you dive right into the worlds she creates. The Caraval trilogy is the prequel to Once Upon a Broken Heart. I highly recommend reading it and the novella before.

    Immortal Longings

    Immortal Longings bekam im englischen Original relativ gemischte Rezensionen. Auf Deutsch fehlt bislang meines Wissens nach ein großflächiges Feedback der LeserInnen, weshalb es mir umso wichtiger ist, auf diesen Titel aufmerksam zu machen. Ich war am Anfang unsicher ob mich das Buch ansprechen würde, fand den Klappentext jedoch sehr interessant, weshalb ich mich schließlich dank eines Leseexemplares, welches mir zur Verfügung stand, dazu entschloss, dem Buch eine Chance zu geben! Immortal Longings Band 1, war mein erstes Chloe Gong Buch und wird wohl auch nicht mein Letztes bleiben. Denn der Schreibstil war packend und der Inhalt erinnert an eine Mischung aus Hunger Games, Divergent und, Maze Runner. & Während sich die Spannung im Laufe der Geschichte langsam aufbaut, kann man das Buch irgendwann nicht mehr weglegen. Vorsicht, dass Buch ist an manchen Stellen etwas brutaler, weshalb ich es erst ab 15/16 empfehlen würde. Die Charaktere waren interessant & ich freue mich nach dem gemeinen Cliffhanger auf Band 2, wobei es „sehnsüchtig darauf warten“ wohl eher trifft.

    Shy Girl

    It rarely happens, but when a book leaves me truly speechless, I immediately know that I have to rate it 5 stars. With this one I had to pause while reading, so I could process, but then again I felt like I could not stop reading this one as well. In fact, ever since I finsihed this one weeks ago not a day has passed in which I did not think about this book at least once. People like to compare Mia Ballard's "Shy Girl" to Rachel Yoder's writing, especially "Nightbitch" and while I haven't read it, the praise, which latter one has received was what made me read Ballard's work. Now; if I had to describe this book with three words, they would be 'pure female rage'. Because that's what it made me feel. It left me angry, sad and disgusted. I was genuinely questioning what on earth I was reading. The protagonist's story was heartwrenching and seeing how she slowly accepts her possible and at the same time gruesome fate, was terrifying. For the plot, Gia, our female protagonist needs money. And when she meets the slightly older Nathan, who makes her a generous offer, she at first hesitates. He offers her more than she needs, *if* she in return agrees to the rules he sets for their arrangement and wears the collar he gifts her. Gia soon realises that things are not the way they seem and that she has agreed to play her part in a dangerous game. But with time Gia changes. Not only mentally, but also physically. I have rarely read a book with this much emotional impact. If you decide to read the book, I do recommend reading the blurb, be sure to check the trigger warnings, as this one truly is gruesome in many ways. That being said, please if you are a reader who is not off age, do wait until you are older hence the topics mentioned in the book are not suited for readers who are younger than 18. This book is perfect for anyone who enjoyed the gripping insanity and gruesomeness of Sayaka Murata's books.

    Schweben

    Mit „Schweben“ schafft Amira Ben Saoud ein literarisches Meisterwerk. Bei ihrem Debüt im Paul Zsolnay Verlag erforscht die Autorin mit ihrer Protagonistin alltägliche Identitätsfragen. Dies passiert dabei mit einem gewissen Humor und einer Leichtigkeit, die einen selbst zum Nachdenken bringen. Inhaltlich ist der dystopisch angehauchte Roman gleichermaßen faszinierend wie spannend. Sprachlich kommt man Dank des fließenden Schreibtstils irrsinnig schnell in einen guten Lesefluss und dennoch ist der Text qualitativ hochwertig. Ein Muss für alle die Romane lieben, die einen zum Nachdenken bringen & gleichzeitig auf der Suche nach etwas Neuem, beziehungsweise frischem Wind sind!
