A crime novel like no other
Initally, I was unsure what to expect from "Strange Pictures". I'll be frank, I'm not the biggest fan of whodunits, especially those done in the fashion of G. T. Karber (author of the "Murdle" series) - and I feared Uketsu might just be a copy-cat of said kind of books. But I was wrong. Macabre and sinister are truly the best adjectives to describe the horrific truths and motives that are being revealed through the nine drawings in the book. Uketsu's style of writing is captivating. Seriously, I couldn't stop reading once I started. Seldom has a book sucked me into its worldbuilding and story the way this book did. The story's simplicity is what makes it special. And I'd recommend it to every crime-aficionado who's looking for something new and unsusual. -

Pictures hold a thousand words
As a new years resolution to read more out of my comfort zone and lessen my BTR-pile, Strange Pictures by Uketsu was the first book I pulled out. You follow disorganized events in people's lives, ranging from students in a paranormal club to a wanna-be journalist who wants to know more about his former mentor. The events are, like I said, disorganized, almost like you're piecing everything together bit by bit with each chapter you read. Often, I had to sit down and pause and piece everything together, which was kind of fun to do along with reading the book. The story was a bit of a mess to follow, especially with the introduction of new characters every chapter, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. Strange Pictures was a nice, quick read and I'll definitely read more of Uketsu's work in the future! -

A Unique and Chilling Thriller
I’ve never come across a concept quite like the one in Strange Pictures before, which is exactly why it grabbed my attention so quickly. The storyline is both original and unsettling, with vivid descriptions that are enhanced by the accompanying images. I also really appreciated the quality of the translation, which made the book easy to follow and enjoyable to read. Although a few parts became a little confusing and had me flipping back to earlier chapters to keep track, the overall experience was gripping and atmospheric. It’s not overly gruesome, but it still manages to create a wonderfully eerie mood. Perfect for the darker autumn months or a spooky night in. -

Strange pictures
Leider konnte mich dieses Buch so gar nicht von sich überzeugen. Mein Partner und ich hatten das Buch als gemeinsame Urlaubslektüre vorgesehen, und leider konnten wir es erst Zuhause dann fertig lesen, denn wir konnten uns einfach nicht wirklich damit anfreunden. Die Bilder, das Zentrum der Geschichte, sind in den meisten Fällen eigentlich nicht so wichtig für das Verständnis der Ereignisse im Buch. Der Autor wiederholt sich STÄNDIG, und zwar in einem Ausmaß, das uns wirklich schon zu einer sehr genervten Haltung gegenüber dem Buch gezwungen hat. Vielleicht liegt es zum Teil an der Übersetzung, aber auch der Schreibstil war nicht unser Fall und wirkte Stellenweise amateurhaft. Das Buch war so überfüllt mit "Infografiken" und Bildern vom Zeitstrahl, dass der Text dadurch völlig untergegangen ist, und ganz allgemein kann man sagen, dass es die Hälfte des Buches auch getan hätte... Die Auflösung kam nicht überraschend, und war zudem ebenfalls viel zu sehr in die Länge gezogen. Schade, ich hätte mir von einem solchen Hype-Titel auf jeden Fall mehr erhofft!
