"Mine has been a life of much shame"
Osamu Dazai's book "No Longer Human" is semi-autobiographical, written about a young man Oba Yozo. I've read one of Dazai's books "Blue Bamboo" a while back and did a deep dive on the author. The author is, by no means, a good person but someone who obviously struggled a lot with his health and mental in post-war Japan. A lot of events Yozo describes have happened to Dazai himself, a failed double suicide for example (something he did with his first wife). It was so fascinating to read and connect pieces of Yozo's life with that of Dazai's. Despite the outdated view of women and sex-workers and the world in general, I enjoyed the book a lot and it shows why it's still a bestseller in Japan. -

Thought provoking japanese classic
„No longer human“ is one of a kind experience you don’t want to live through yourself. An autobiographical novel about Dazai himself and his last complete work before his suicide. Yozo, our main character, struggles with a couple of things in life, but mostly with trying to find the meaning of his existence and the reason why he is alive. He alienates himself more and more from humanity and struggles to find a real purpose. He sees himself as a failure and isn’t capable of understanding other human beings. It’s a japanese classic. The translation was beautiful even though i cannot guarantee that it was accurate. To round it out here is one of my favorite quotes of the book: “Mine has been a life of much shame.I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being.“ -

Wenn man sich in der Welt fremd fühlt
Wir begleiten den Protagonisten von Kindestagen bis ins Erwachsenenalter. Schon früh lernt er, was es bedeutet, eine Maske zu tragen und sich der Gesellschaft zu fügen. Für Außenstehende führt er ein normales Leben, doch innerlich findet er sich in dieser Welt gar nicht zurecht. Er versteht den Menschen als Wesen nicht. Und mit den Jahren wächst dieses Unverständnis nur weiter. Der Autor geht schonungslos in seinen Schilderungen vor. Auf den Leser wird keine Rücksicht genommen. Der Roman hat zudem autobiografische Züge, die wiederkehrende Themen besprechen, wie Depression oder soziale Entfremdung. Mir hat vor allem die Sprache unfassbar gut gefallen. Leider gibt es keine deutsche Übersetzung mehr. Man muss außerdem auch den Kopf frei haben, um das Werk und den Schreibstil schätzen zu können. Es sind harte Themen und brutale Bilder, die Osamu erzeugt, aber es lohnt sich wirklich! Ich würde es vor allem all jenen empfehlen, die gerne Camus, Sartre oder Yanagihara lesen. -

This books haunts my mind and changed my vision of the world
This book tore my heart into pieces. One of the saddest books I've ever read. Osamu Dazai manages to put words to the feelings you were searching for far too long. It's like if the author is crawling inside your head and writing down every thing and every emotion that's going on there. The way Dazai explains his world gets you to tear up and question all that has happened in the past and all that's going to happen in the future. You won't be able to look at humanity the same as before.
