A Study in Drowning

Ava Reid konnte mich bereits mit „Fable for the end of the world” restlos begeistern. Umso gespannter war ich auf ihr bekanntestes Werk, welches mit einem Dark-Academia-Setting beworben wurde – und ich wurde absolut nicht enttäuscht! Das Cover: Es ist mysteriös und zeigt unsere Protagonistin Effy in dem geheimnisumwitterten Setting. Ich mag es unglaublich gerne. Die Handlung: Effy möchte nichts lieber als Literatur zu studieren, jedoch ist es Frau in Llyr verboten. Daher studiert sie gezwungenermaßen Architektur und wird eines Tages bei einem Wettbewerb ausgewählt, die Villa ihres bereits toten Lieblingsautors zu renovieren. Dort angekommen fällt jedoch auf, dass Hiraeth Manor beinahe vom Meer eingenommen wurde und auch das Anwesen in katastrophalen Zustand ist. Und auch die Geschichten über den Elfenkönig, die vom Autor verfasst wurden, reißen von ihr nicht ab und verfolgen sie bis in ihre Träume. Als sie und der Literaturstudent Preston – der für eigene Unirecherchen ebenfalls dort unterkommt – auf ein dunkles Geheimnis stoßen, ist niemand auf Hiraeth Manor mehr sicher… Meine Meinung: Es ist düster, es ist verwunschen, ein wenig romantisch – und ein Jahreshighlight für mich! Die gesamte Geschichte wird sehr ruhig erzählt und schwillt wie ein Crescendo an. Ich hatte die gesamte Zeit das Gefühl, als würde ich mit einer Kerze durch ein dunkles Anwesen bei Nacht laufen und an jeder Ecke ein neues Geheimnis aufdecken. Ava Reid gibt anfangs sehr wenige Hinweise auf den Fortlauf der Geschichte und erst nach und nach ergeben sich erste Erkenntnisse. Zudem ist es sehr düster und teilweise auch ein wenig gespenstisch – beinahe, als würde Ava Reid die Geschichte im Flüsterton erzählen. Auch Wochen später habe ich einzelne Szene noch gestochen scharf im Kopf, einfach weil die Autor*in so unglaublich bildlich schreibt. Auch die Gewichtung der Liebesgeschichte und dem eigentlichen Handlungsstrang empfand ich als sehr ausgewogen und kann einfach nur festhalten, dass diese Geschichte ein unglaubliches Geschenk ist. Die Charaktere: Effy ist vermutlich eine Protagonistin, die nicht allen Leser*innen zusagt, ich jedoch sehr nachempfinden konnte. Sie mag anfangs ein wenig ängstlich wirken, aber je tiefer die Lesenden in die Geschichte abtauchen, desto mehr wird ihre Vergangenheit aufgedeckt und wie wirklich mit der einzigen Frau in einem Studiengang voll mit Männern umgegangen wird. Doch ihre Entwicklung mochte ich unglaublich gerne und hätte sie gerne zwischenzeitlich in den Arm genommen. Doch auch Preston mochte ich unglaublich gerne. Seine empathische und rücksichtsvolle Art wird zwar erst ein wenig später aufgedeckt, aber hat mir sehr zugesagt. Ebenso war ich überrascht, wie gut diese Geschichte funktionierte, obwohl hauptsächlich nur die beiden vorkamen. Fazit: Eine Geschichte, die einen unglaublichen Eindruck bei mir hinterlassen hat. Ich habe sie verschlungen und wünschte, ich könnte sie noch einmal das erste Mal lesen, so sehr vermisse ich bereits die Charaktere und das Setting. Ich vergebe hier 5/5 Sternen und eine klare Leseempfehlung!

This one is just perfect for fall or winter. The dark and gloomy atmosphere was captured phenomenally well by Ava Reid. A Study in Drowning is a gothic and slightly horror-esque YA novel by Ava Reid. With a slightly lyrical writing style Reid has written a story centered around literature, fairytales and survival.

When I say I devoured this book, I mean it. One day is all it took for me to finish this brilliant book. Ava Reid has once again proven why she is one of my favourite Authors, every Book of hers was a journey. Magical, dark and mysterious <- there's no better way to describe it.

Das beste Buch, was ich dieses Jahr gelesen habe!!! Atmosphärisch, poetisch und ein absoluter MUSS für alle, die die dunkle Jahreszeit perfekt einläuten möchten. Ava Reid hat mich auf jeden Fall überzeugt!

It was my first book by Ava Reid, and I have to say: I am in love. First of all, can we talk about how both, the UK and the US, cover slaps? I love both covers and that they are unique but also similar in their way. They both fit the story very well. I love the dark green of the UK Version, and I can’t wait to add it to my shelf. But more important is the story itself. This story is perfect for autumn and rainy days. It’s a bit spooky, and I loved it. If you enjoyed books like „Gallant“, „The Last Tale of the Flower Bride“, „House of Salt and Sorrows“ and „Mexican Gothic“, you should get „A Study in Drowning“. The writing was a bit different than the usual style I tend to gravitate to, and I had a few little starting problems while getting a grip on the world, but after a while, it vanished. I read this book in one go. I can’t wait to reread it when the weather fits the book better. The story itself was really interesting. I didn’t know what was real or not, but I enjoyed that. I like it when the reader is kinda of in the dark about reality and has to decide for themselves. The characters were interesting. I could relate to Effy in some things and it hurt a bit. I didn’t feel the love story completely, but I think that the focus of the book is more the fantasy / dark academia aspect and not the love story, so I was okay with it. Overall the story was so well in itself and just really a vibe that I was craving for a long time that I decided to give this book five stars, even tho there were some minor stuff that I didn’t like. Conclusion If you enjoyed books like „Gallant“, „The Last Tale of the Flower Bride“, „House of Salt and Sorrows“ and „Mexican Gothic“, you should get „A Study in Drowning“.
