A fast-paced, action-packed sci-fi/fantasy mix with interesting characters, mechas, and a lot of historical Chinese influence
As someone who loves main characters who put themselves first and enjoys morally questionable characters in general I had a lot of fun with this cast. Wu Zetian is no heroine in shining armour – until she literally is (at least the shining armour part) – but her fire, strong will and thirst for vengeance definitely convinced me to stick along. Shimin and Yizhi round out our main trio really well: the three of them could not be more different, especially at first glance, but they do share similar values and end up working together really well. I adore all three of them on their own (even tho Yizhi might just be my favourite) but in my opinion they really shine as a unit. I definitely enjoyed the quick pace for worldbuilding and plot development as we learn more about how this world functions along with Zetian but fans of big, in depth lore-drops and slow build-ups might find Iron Widow a little too fast.
