I always choose a quote as title for my reviews, to give the fellow readers a first short impression of the book - with "Girl Woman Other" the task of deciding which one to take took me quite a while, since the novel has so many quote-worthy sentences. Reading Evaristo feels like reading a poem, the text has almost no punctuation marks or capital letters which makes it both interesting to read and one can loose oneself in the story from the very beginning. We follow twelve very different women through their daily lives, all of them being connected to each other in varying depth but above all have one thing in common: they are perceived as female, which is the root cause for many disparate kinds of challenges. Yet this book is not only about what it means to be viewed as a woman in todays society, but covers many more issues like (White/economical) privilege, racism, religion, migration etc. Rightfully so, it was awarded the Booker Prize in 2019. “as if she was the kind of woman who'd amputate her aspirations to become one of his decorative appendages”
