For the plot we follow Scarlett Dragna, the older one of two sisters who has been writing letters to the grand Caraval master Legend, a powerful magician who used to host annual games of illusions and magic. Her wish: for Legend and his performers to travel to Trisda, the home island of Scarlett and Donatella, so they can experience Caraval for Tella's birthday. When Scarlett is supposed to get married, she changes her mind and distinctly asks that he shall not invite them this year, as it would be more than incovenient with her wedding her wedding being around the corner. It is then that two of the sought-after tickets are sent to her. Together with her sister and the wity sailor Julian, Scarlett (if involuntarily) travels to Isla de los Sueños to take part in Caraval. Will she be able to look through the illusions of the game and trust her sanity and heart? For me this book series was a huge highlight of 2023 and I can highly recommend it to anyone who adores Urban Fantasy, mixed with magical elements and a bit of romance! Stephanie Garber has a beautiful, descriptive writing style which makes you dive right into the worlds she creates. The Caraval trilogy is the prequel to Once Upon a Broken Heart. I highly recommend reading it and the novella before.
