Coraline

As Coraline moves with her family into a new house she finds a strange looking door. Behind it she finds her mother and her father but something seems off... both of them have black-buttons as eyes and they want her to stay with them forever... A fairytale-like horror story.

Eins meiner Lieblingsbücher in dieser verregneten, nebligen Jahreszeit. Faszinierend schaurige Charaktere in einer gespenstischen Parallelwelt. Neil Gaimans Schreibstil lässt mich jedes mal voller Angst um Coraline bangen. Wird sie es schaffen ihre Eltern zu retten und den klauen der anderen Mutter zu entkommen? Oder wird sie letztendlich doch ein Spiel mit ihr spielen müssen?

It was a surprise for me that the book is so small and short. But I really enjoyed the story, it was truly amazing! I got chills... and the illustrations??? It was so creepy! I like the way the author writes, it amazes me how he can combine a creepy story for kids with a nice messege: be brave. If you know why you're doing this, be brave enough to pull it through! I REALLY recommend to watch the animated movie to the book, because it shows so well how Neil Gaiman imagined the world he created. That's the best book adaptation I've seen so far. Please read and enjoy this book like I did. And if you're scared, just be brave. That's what Coraline is about.

I watched the movie first and was hoping for the book to be good … What can I say? I liked it even more! It is such a beautiful “Alice in wonderland”-like tale that adds a darker and thus deeper touch to the idea of “girl escaping into a world behind a portal” theme. It is a good read full of wisdom that will be enjoyed by children as well as adults. (I was also happy to find an interesting comment by the author at the end of the book, telling us more about the idea and working process behind “Coraline”.)

Coraline is a young girl who feels very bored in her family‘s new flat and goes exploring. She stumbles across a door that leads her to another flat that looks exactly like her own. Only it’s different. The „other“ parents are already waiting on the other side…
