Willkommen auf der dunklen Seite der Pilzsuche! Golecki hat ein außergewöhnliches Buch geschaffen, in dem sich Fakten, Mythen und historische Berichte zu einem unterhaltsamen und informativen Konglomerat vereinen. Mit fantastischem Farbschnitt und großartig illustriert ist dieser Pilzführer nicht nur inhaltlich herrlich sondern auch optisch ein Kunstwerk.

    The Murderbot Diaries Vol. 1

    I love this series. That's a bold statement right from the get-go, but it's true. The first two novellas in Martha Wells Murderbot-Universe have rekindled my love for science-fiction and bookseries' in general. It's funny, it's gripping and it has an interesting set of characters and background lore, that gives you just enough information to want to know more, but never so much that you're overwhelmed. Follow the universe's wittiest SecUnit, a humanoid-robotic Construct, as it has to guard a gaggle of hippie scientists on their survey on an unexplored planet. All while keeping the fact hidden that it has gained freedom of will and could do away with them if it wanted to. Which it doesn't. Because, as it states: "As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure." Especially, since all it wants to do is to be left alone and watch its favorite show, Sanctuary Moon. But that is easier said than done, because its load of science-nerds has the tendency to get themselves in constant trouble and are way to naive and likeable in a universe that is mostly ruled by corporations and capitalistic interests. And Murderbot knows one thing for sure: Corporations dont care much about bodily autonomy, neither of humans and principally not of rogue SecUnits. So it has to protect its lovely charge from being harmed and itself from being molten down.

    Garlic and the Vampire

    In this cute Graphic Novel, Garlic, one of witch Agnes' veggie and fruit helpers, must confront the local vampire, and therefore her fears. Funny, heartwarming and so sweet you might get diabetes from it. The characters are so loveable - except celery - you want to spend way more time with them. That is the only downside I can find about this story: it is quite short. But there is a second Novel, so all hope is not lost.

    And Then There Were None

    THE Crime Novel that brought the "isolated people get picked off one by one" trope to ultimate heights; and no one else so far has ever replicated it in such a stunning fashion. Published in 1939 the novel still holds its ground. The story is as simple as captivating: Ten people on an island get cut off from the rest of the world, and after being confronted by a tape record with their perceived sins, the body count starts. Everybody is claiming innocence, but no one seems to be free of guilt. But besides wondering if the accused are actually guilty, the bigger question is: Is anybody going to survive? Christies novel keeps one guessing throughout the story and the twists and turns keep coming without ever being too see-through. A short and gripping read.

    Be Still My Unbeating Heart

    Here comes the sassy, classy, funny and thrilling queer supernatural mystery-romance you all have been waiting for! Well, maybe you didn't, but you should definitely give it a bite (bad pun intended). Follow Bastian, "vegetarian" vampire , on his andventures in the breathtakingly beautiful little italian town Vernazza, trying to enjoy his holiday. But instead of fancy drinks at the beach he is drawn into a murder investigation, has to prove he is not a bloodlusting vampire and on top of it all, has to fend off the arrival of the vampire council, which will not only end his undead existence, but probably also the town itself. Thankfully he has his trusted black cat familiar Whitby with him and is under observation by the stern, stoic and very sexy police officer De Luca. Together they must solve the mystery, or it might be a desaster for everyone. The game is on, the sun as relentless as the prejudice and the stakes are high - and sharp. But Bastian is here to give his all, because vampires "come in all flavors, like sorbet."

    Horrorstor

    Jeder* der schon mal einen Ikea-Einkauf erledigen musste und es alles andere als fantastisch fand, kann sich hier wiederfinden. Haunted-House-Story meets Möbelladen. Offiziell naturlich nicht Ikea, aber man muss nur einen Blick auf das Cover werfen um zu wissen, wo und wie die Story verortet ist. Von unheimlich zu blutig entwickelt sich der Roman vom anfänglichen Horror kapitalistischer Architektur zu einem Kampf ums Überleben. Blöd nur, wenn die Gegner übernatürlicher Art sind und einen Faible für bösartiges Möbeldesign haben. Dunkler Humor und noch dunklerer Horror vereinen sich zu einem Roman im Ikeakatalog-Format, inklusive detaillierter Möbelzeichnungen.

    Sworn Soldier - What Moves The Dead

    Alex Easton, sworn soldier, travels to the gothic, creepy mansion of kan childhood friends after a cry for help from Madeline Usher. That's all you need to know plotwise, everything else will unfold before your eyes and suck you into a beautifully written, dark, macabre story which is also quite funny at times. If the name Usher rings a bell, it is because this novella is inspired by Edgar Alan Poe's story "The Fall of the House of Usher." Some people seemed puzzled by the briefness of it, but I think it's the perfect length, especially for something that is based on a short story. If you wonder, what the hell a sworn soldier is, or what "kan" means, you best find that out by reading the novella. Kingfisher creates a sphere of interesting and unique characters, wrapped up in mysteries and some very unnerving discoveries.

    Das Septemberhaus

    Geschichten über "Haunted-Houses" gibt es viele, aber ich habe bisher noch keines gelesen, das von einem Teilzeit-Spuk handelt. Margaret und Hal sind auf der Suche nach ihrem Traumhaus und als sie es endlich finden, ist es so perfekt, dass es unheimlich ist. Unheimlich wird es dann auch, im September, wenn der Spuk so richtig loslegt. Hal hat bald genug, aber Margaret möchte ihr Traumhaus nicht aufgeben, man kann sich schließlich an alles gewöhnen. Kein Grund, auszuziehen, nur weil die Wände bluten. Oder einem Geister ins Ohr schreien. Oder der eigene Mann verschwindet. Carissa Orlando erzählt in diesem schwarzhumorigen Roman eine Geistergeschichte der etwas anderen Art, mit Charakteren, die sich lebendig anfühlen, sogar die verstorbenen, und mit denen man mitfiebert, auch wenn man sie vielleicht nicht leiden kann. Außer wahrscheinlich Hal. Besonders gut hat mir das Ende gefallen. Spannend, etwas blutig und hoffnungsvoll, besonders für einen Horrorroman.

    Rebecca Netley presents a modern gothic novel set in the 1800s on a scottish island. Dark, gripping, brimming with atmosphere and mystery, this story serves everything one could want from a classic gothic tale. The main protagonist, Elspeth, starts a new life in Iskar, the impressive, but somewhat dilapidated mansion on the scottish island of Skelthsea, to serve as a nanny for Mary, a young girl who hasn't spoken since her twin brother William died. Elspeth tries to help Mary and forget her own tragic past, but living in an eerie environment with no personal connections, whilst being surrounded by rumours of murder and witchcraft, is anything but an easy task. Elspeth is set on solving the mysteries of Iskar and the Island, but when she hears the whistling, things get darker and darker and soon not only her sanitiy is at risk, but also her life....

    Herrliche Parodie auf mittelalterliche Ritterromane à la Erec. In seinem typischen und vielgeliebten Stil erzählt Walter Moers eine weitere witzige Geschichte aus seinem Käpt'n-Blaubär-Universum. Lustig, abwechslungsreich, herrlich illustriert und mit viel Fantasie stürzt sich Qwert in seine Abenteuer. Oder besser wird gestoßen, denn er fällt durch ein Dimensionsloch, was ihn in diesem Moment jedoch wenig stört, befindet er sich ja im Zustand der "Saloppen Katatonie". Am Ende des Sturzes findet er sich im Körper des attraktiven Prinz Kaltbluth wieder, um kurz darauf in absurde und komische Aventiuren verwickelt zu werden, wie es sich für einen romantischen Ritter gehört. Inklusive Erzählerstimme, die dem Leser und auch praktischerweise Qwert sein Schicksal kommentiert. TIPP: Auch wenn man noch keinen Walter Moers Roman gelesen hat, ist Qwert empfehlenswert, denn die Handlung findet losgelöst vom Blaubär-Universum statt und entwickelt eine eigene Welt.

    Deutsche Hörer!

    Thomas Manns bewegende BBC-Rede zwischen 1940-1945. Schonungslos ehrlich, aber immer mit Empathie und einer tiefen Liebe zur Deutschen Kultur, spricht er kraftvoll und mit Haltung. Aufnahmen von einigen seiner Reden können über diverse Audiotheken oder You-Tube angehört werden, was das Leseerlebnis immens verstärkt. Außerdem sollte Mely Kiyaks Vor- und Nachwort unbedingt gelesen werden, denn es ist nicht nur gut geschrieben, sondern liefert auch interessante und wichtige Infos für den übergeordneten Kontext der Reden. Heute aktueller denn je, ist dieses Buch ein Weckruf aus der Vergangenheit.
