A very clever ghost story. Booklist

The book s packaging as a catalog complete with illustrations of increasingly sinister-looking furniture with faux Scandinavian names gives it a charmingly oddball allure. Publishers Weekly

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Horror meets Ikea

Orsk is a fictive furniture store chain in the USA and this story plays in one of them. We follow as the store manager and two co-workers investigate strange occurences within the store. Every morning they find how furniture was moved, how beds have been spoiled by mysterious fluids and that everything smells odd. They decided to spend one night in the store to figure out what is happening, which turns out to be a terrible decision. The design made me buy this book, but I stayed for the story. Although Grady Hendrix doesn't reinvent the horror story, I really enjoyed reading it and loved all the small details that made this book look like a furniture catalogue. But I have to warn every future reader, the story is quite disturbing, shocking and brutal. All in all it's not a book for the weak hearted.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Ikea, but haunted.

The concept behind this novel is its saving grace because I found the execution of the book lacking. The style of the book is intriguing: It is structured like a furniture catalogue and each chapter introduces one furniture item the store sells. It was creative to see those change into monstrous versions of themselves during the novel. I did not care about the characters at all and I disliked how they flip-flopped in their motivations and mindset, which was only justified in the sense that the book needed them to act a certain way to progress the story. This book has been described as a satire and a mix of comedy and horror. The novel does not work for me in either genre. I can't recall one scene of humor that did its job, and the horror aspects felt rather like gross-out moments. Attempting to shock the reader but lacking substance and purpose. I would have liked it better if the book had committed more to the concept 'Yes, we have an eldritch horror in our work place, but the true horror is capitalism'. All in all, I couldn't commit to the suspension of disbelief, but I liked the concept of the novel and would happily watch a movie with the same idea. This was the author's first work, and I've heard good things about his other books, so I am not averse to reading more from him.

    Disappointed

Dnf page 170. Imagine after crossing the 60% mark, i still felt nothing. The characters were bad and cringe and i was like wtf was happening here. I didn’t like the writing style. I found the concept very interesting, but it then it did not live up to the expectation. I was not feeling the vibe or spookiness and it just felt absurd me. I don’t even read so much horror and this still felt absurd. This book was neither funny or horror. I don’t know what it was.

Did you ever wonder, what‘s happening...

Did you ever wonder, what‘s happening in stores afterhours... When everybody is gone home and the lights go out…Perhaps you even wished for it - to be locked in, and have fun in a giant furniture store….. It might not be as much fun as you think…..
