The Custom of the Country erzählt vom Aufstieg der ehrgeizigen Undine aus einer Familie neureicher Industrieller zu den obersten Schichten der New Yorker und der französischen Gesellschaft. Mit der Protagonistin entwirft Wharton eine Anti-Heldin, die skrupellos ihren Weg geht und für ihre Ambitionen Familie und Werte opfert.
Einen besonderen Reiz erhält der Roman durch die Gegenüberstellung der Neuen mit der Alten Welt in Form der amerikanischen und französischen Gesellschaft. Undine bewegt sich über gesellschaftliche Grenzen hinweg und versteht es, sich den jeweiligen Konventionen perfekt anzupassen.
Mit Undine entwirft die Autorin eine faszinierende Frauengestalt, die allen Klischees widerspricht.
