Written in 1913 by major American writer Edith Wharton, "The Custom of the Country" follows a young woman's ruthless ambition to excel within a judgemental Manhattan society.
It is Wharton's ninth novel and with its subject matter revolving around divorce, reflects Wharton's own life around this time, when the author divorced and moved to France permanently.
Its themes include the peril of materialism, selfishness and narcissism, and the cruelty brought on by ruthless ambition. Often told from the vantage point of the protagonist, the novel never strays from third-person perspective.
Undine Spragg, the heroine, is an ambitious young woman from the American midwest. Raised in the fictional town of Apex, she's the product of a family who has risen to a certain social status through sketchy financial dealings.
Undine strives to rise in New York City society through a succession of marriages and divorces that ultimately lead to her undoing.

The Custom of the Country erzählt vom Aufstieg der ehrgeizigen Undine aus einer Familie neureicher Industrieller zu den obersten Schichten der New Yorker und der französischen Gesellschaft. Mit der Protagonistin entwirft Wharton eine Anti-Heldin, die skrupellos ihren Weg geht und für ihre Ambitionen Familie und Werte opfert.
Einen besonderen Reiz erhält der Roman durch die Gegenüberstellung der Neuen mit der Alten Welt in Form der amerikanischen und französischen Gesellschaft. Undine bewegt sich über gesellschaftliche Grenzen hinweg und versteht es, sich den jeweiligen Konventionen perfekt anzupassen.
Mit Undine entwirft die Autorin eine faszinierende Frauengestalt, die allen Klischees widerspricht. Die Tragik der Protagonistin liegt darin, dass sie mit dem Erreichten nicht zufrieden sein kann, sondern unmittelbar nach Erreichen eines sozialen Status neue Begehrlichkeiten entwickelt, die den Triumph über ihren gesellschaftlichen Erfolg zerstören. Die Protagonistin ist keine Sympathieträgerin, sondern eine für die Entstehungszeit des Romans erstaunlich moderne Frauenfigur und das ist es, was das Besondere des flüssig lesbaren Romans ausmacht.
