No answers needed

Bewertungsnummer: 2627757

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

A story about living but not really living. How do you remember without emotion? After all memories are feelings and they shape who we are as a person. So what are we without them? This book will make you ask a lot of questions, you will feel confused, angry, sad and at the end of it all: a bit lost. A lot of these questions will go unanswered and I get the feeling that getting answers is just not the point here. The reader simply needs to deal with the way the world works, much like the characters that live in it: with quiet acceptance. So if you´re starting this book expecting answers you will feel a bit dissapointed but I promise the story makes up for it all. ~ཐིཋྀ

Beautiful prose & eerie atmosphere

Bewertungsnummer: 2447938

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

The writing style is absolutely beautiful. The novel deals with conceptual loss, i.e. what happens when things suddenly lose their meaning. I found it hard to wrap my head around the plot at times - after all, how can a person simply „forget“ the meaning and purpose of an item - but also rewarding and disturbing. Reminded me a little of the Handmaid’s Tale. The genre is probably best described as psychological horror. A tense, atmospheric read with almost lyrical prose.

What happens to things that have already been forgotten?

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

On an island where every now and then things just vanish, fade to something unknown, a young author is trying to hold on to memories that are long gone. When things get out of hand, people who do rememember get arrested, she helps a young publisher to stay hidden and listens to him talking about everything long gone from her mind. Yoko Ogawa has created a masterpiece of storytelling.
