A big recommendation for every art fan of the chilling and invisible magic that is all-surrounding.
The new book by art historian Alix Paré is an incredible masterpiece and an unparalleled selection of more than 300 paintings, drawings and engravings of ghosts, demons, fairies and witches. She is focusing on paintings from the 18th and 19th century and is combining the most magical ones here in this new book of hers, "Supernatural - A compendium of esoteric and occult art", with an incredible preface by philosopher Philippe Baudouin on the topic of "A Haunted History of Art", in which he leads a way into the book with describing art as an invitation to rethink about our knowledge of reality - or what we consider is reality. She presents an amazingly curated selection of paintings, drawings and engravings, including some of the most beautiful works of Romanticism, Academicism, Symbolism and Pre-Raphaelite art. Alix Paré compares this book with a magical promenade beneath a lustrous and ever shining full moon. Pages and chapters filled with magical creatures born out of our imagination as well as the powerfull figure of the femme fatal - Paré also acknowledges the issue of misogyny, which is a huge topic in (not just) this specific time period. The book starts with a chronolgy about science and imagination, follows up with a codex of the occults (eg Black Magic or Occultism) and then dives straight into the book itself, which is divided in eight sections (such as book one - "Luna", sixty plus pages about beautiful art pieces surrounding the moon). A magical and spine-chilling voyage through the eerily beautiful dark art from over hundred masters of shadows such as Gustave Doré, Francisco de Goya, Luis Ricardo Falero, Serafino Macchiati and many more. I am utterly obsessed and in love with this book and think it's a wonderful addition in every bookshelf. Also I would recommend any of her other books as well ("The Fantastic Gustave Doré", "Cats in Art"). Last but not least we NEED to talk about the physical book itself!! The black colored edges with the quote "Thy settled fate, Dark as it is, all change would aggravate." by Percy Shelley, husband of the famous author Mary Shelley ("Frankenstein") printed on them is stunning!!! Would also make a perfect gift to get lost in these colder months of the year.
