Strong and witty characters - humans as well as cats

Bewertung am 18.05.2026

Bewertungsnummer: 3142009

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

The story woven by Heather Fawcett is absolutely beautifully written in such a way that it lures you in. She’s created characters with much depth and cleverness to them. Not only do Agnes and Havelock have a strong personality, but also every cat was painted in different shades. I didn’t know cats could be so versatile since I’m arguably not a cat person. However the details made me fall in love with each one of them. Agnes is such an organized, list-loving person while Havelock’s life is a personified mess. Kind of like a mad scientist, he loves experimenting with magic and doesn’t care much about anything else. It was so interesting to see how the two personalities were slowly growing on each other. A little more romance would’ve been nice but honestly, I’m just a sucker for romance. Generally, the book was cozy for sure but the plot capturing nonetheless. It also made me laugh out loud several times since the banter between Agnes and Havelock was impeccable. Even though both of them were completely different, neither of the characters lost themselves or gave up their distinctive awkward traits, it still ended up being a weirdly perfect fit.

Cats, magic and odd personalities

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

I love Heather Fawcetts Writing Style and her extraordinary ideas since Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies, so I knew there was no chance I would not like this book - even though I am not the biggest fan of cozy fantasy books. But perhaps ... this might change from now on? Because this book was an absolute joy. Agnes Aubert takes care of cats from the streets, but her old shop was destroyed during a battle from magicians. Since it is not very easy for someone with a cat charity to find a new shop, she ahs to move in in a very dubious shop. Turn out that under the dubious shop lives the worlds most famous magician. And if that wasn't enough, his evil sister is looking for a book he seems to have and she nothing can really stop her. So the content itself is very promising, but what made this book so wonderful was the authors way of describing the people in it. They are all so unique and flawed, but in such a lovely way. Agnes herself for ones loves lists and structure. She is also a very friendly woman taking everyone into shelter, even mean cats like His Majesty, that are undeserving of her kindness. And Havelock - the magician living right under her - is so weird but loving in his own way. I always giggled when he couldn't stop talking about magic stuff and Agnes zoomed out for a while. Even the side characters and the cat themselves are very caputring. I mean, in the end, every cat has a kind of a human partner fitting to them? What an awesome idea! In addition, Heather Fawcett Writing unfolds this world perfectly. She has a very vivid way of writing, always gripping me and putting myself right into the middle of her books. Some scenes will life in my head for a very long time - especially one moment later on in the book, that I just can't forget because of how emotionally loaded it is. I can't lie, I would have loved a little bit more romance in the book, but I get that it is a Cozy Read and it fullfilled that role perfectly.
