Ich wollte schon länger mal ein Buch von dieser Autorin lesen, weil sie mir schon zuvor in Buchhandlungen hin und wieder mal über den Weg gelaufen ist, aber erst dieses Buch hat es geschafft, dass ich gesagt hab "das lese ich jetzt!". Meine letzte Vampir-Story war "Twilight" und ich war bereit für eine erwachsene, düstere Version eines Vampir-Romans. Ich bin zwar kein Fan von historischen Romanen, aber "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil" wollte ich dennoch eine Chance geben, da ja zumindest ein Handlungsstrang fast in der Gegenwart spielt. Leider muss ich gestehen, dass ich mich trotzdem durch das Buch eher gekämpft habe. Die 3 parallelen Handlungsstränge schienen mir so lange ins "Nichts" zu laufen, auf mich wirkte es so als hatte die Autorin einfach so viele Details zu den 3 Frauen ausgearbeitet, die sie unbedingt mit ins Buch bringen wollte, von denen sich mir als Leser aber sehr lange nicht erschlossen hat, warum wir davon überhaupt erfahren. Dadurch hat es so lange gedauert bis die Story mal richtig ins Rollen kam und als sie das tat war sie auch schon vorbei. Es mag sein, dass ich das Prinzip des Buchs nicht verstanden habe, aber aus meiner Sicht hätte man fast die Hälfte des Inhalts streichen können ohne dass es dem Buch geschadet hätte. Vielleicht war es auch ein klassischer Fall von "falsches Buch zur falschen Zeit", weil ich richtig Lust auf ein spannendes Buch hatte und V.E. Schwab dann doch eher einen epischen Ansatz verfolgt, der dem ein bisschen konträr ging. Nichtsdestotrotz würde ich der Autorin noch einmal eine Chance geben, denn vom Ansatz her fand ich die Story wirklich gut und die Charaktere waren super vielschichtig ausgearbeitet, das hat mir sehr gut gefallen.

I like Schwab's stories and enjoy their slow rhythm but this one was absolutely a gem. This book has some awesome quotes that can be read again and again. "Some people keep their heart tucked so deep, they hardly know it’s there. But you, you have always worn it like a second skin. Open to the world. You feel it all. The love and pain. The joy and hope and sorrow. It will make your life harder, but it will also make it beautiful." The story is a chase of love and obsession through time. Really recommend it!

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab was one of my favorite reads this year. Told through the perspectives of three distinct and unforgettable women, the novel weaves together their stories with heart, depth, and a touch of the uncanny. None of the three women fit neatly into the expectations of their time. Maria is wild and full of life, her fiery red hair sparking rumors of witchcraft wherever she goes. Charlotte is caught kissing another girl and is swiftly sent away to London. Alice’s world is upended after an uncharacteristic one-night stand with a mysterious woman who leaves more questions than answers. Each of these women is transformed into something more than human—something eternal and hungry. As their stories unfold, we see how they wrestle with themes of identity, power, desire, and survival. Do I even need to say more to make you want to read this book? This was the first one of V.E. Schwabs books that I've read and I am Hooked. "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil" is a story about hunger, love, desire, rage. Schwabs way of writing blends fiction and fantasy seemlessly; this vampire story is told through three different POVs starting back in the 1500s - María, Charlotte and Alice. They all have different motivations and reasons as to why and how, but how is it all tangled together? If you want something that sucks you in completely and gets you (back) into the phenomenal genre of (queer) vampire literatur - there you go.
