As an immigrant who came to the West, El Akkad believed that it promised freedom. A place of justice for all. But in the past twenty years, reporting on the War on Terror, Ferguson, climate change, Black Lives Matter protests, and more, and watching the unmitigated slaughter in Gaza, El Akkad has come to the conclusion that much of what the West promises is a lie. I wish this was fiction
With this book Omar El Akkad captured the gruesome happenings in Gaza up to the start of this year but also a part of himself. He writes about his history, his belonging. El Akkad tells two stories in one book. One shows his own upbringing in Egypt and Qatar and later his career as a journalist. Because of this it felt more like reading a bunch of articles but I personally liked that about this book. The other story states facts that make you wish this was fiction. He does this precisely and brutally honest and I think that this is very important for a book like this.
