The Beggar Student

Although it‘s been 85 years since this short novel was originally published, I was truly amazed by how current it seems (aside from some topics which ultimately indicate the time this was written in. This was my second book written by Osamu Dazai and I have to say, although he didn’t write that many works - or at least not that many which have been translated as well - his writing is truly fascinating. I already liked No Longer Human and the way inserts himself in »The Beggar Student« was almost as fascinating. It made me wonder whether (though the blurb says the author in this book is fictional) he might actually have experienced the things in the book. I will most definitely be reflecting on this work for a bit longer and can only recommend it! 4,75 / 5
