Funny, adorable, queer Regency romance! Hari Conner's comic about a trio of friends growing up and dealing with social expectations - finding a match, specifically - is utterly delightful. Great artwork, witty writing, loveable characters, quirky situations, and sensitive, intelligent handling of issues around queerness, race, and money in a decidedly heteronormative, racist, elitist society. It's obvious Conner had fun writing and drawing their characters, most visible in the cartoony reaction faces of Eleanor, but also in the wider cast of characters. And it's heartwarming how the story shows kindness and acceptance, sometimes in unexpected places. I highly recommend it!

There is nothing more to say about this graphic novel other than that it demonstrates that history has always been queer. The story follows three friends: one who doesn't want to marry because she's not interested in men; one who was born a girl but doesn't identify as one; and a black girl who doesn't want to marry for money, but for love. In the novel, you follow all three friends as they try to live their lives in the 1800s, struggling with the rules but never losing themselves. The beautiful artwork and emotional scenes, as well as the bibliography about queer history at the end, make this book perfect. Recommended for fans of Jane Austen's Emma and Bridgerton.
