I went into Bloodguard expecting a gritty fantasy romance and it delivered on almost every level. From the very first chapter, I was pulled into a brutal world where survival isn't guaranteed, trust is rare, and love seems nearly impossible. And somehow, that’s exactly what made it work for me. The story follows Leith, a gladiator trying to win back his stolen family, and Maeve, an elven princess burdened by a curse and her royal duties. What I really loved was that both characters felt real. They’re not flawless heroes, they're damaged, angry, and often make terrible choices but that’s what made me root for them even harder. The romance was intense. It’s definitely not your soft and fluffy kind of love story. There’s pain, betrayal, and a constant push and pull between the two. Still, underneath all that, there’s something raw and honest about how their connection grows. I wouldn’t call it a slow burn in the traditional sense it sparks fast but trust takes much longer to build, and that tension really worked for me. The world itself is brutal but fascinating. The gladiator games were vivid and hard to read at times because they’re so violent—but that’s part of the point. It’s not a sanitized fantasy. There’s blood, corruption, sacrifice, and so many layers of political power plays that kept things interesting. I do wish a few parts of the world had been more fleshed out, especially the magical elements, but I never felt lost. My only real complaint is the pacing in some parts—certain scenes felt rushed, and the ending came quicker than I expected. It left me with a lot of questions, but I suppose that’s what sequels are for.
