Auch wer den "Vorgängerromen" BROOKLYN nicht gelesen hat (aber vielleicht die mit Saoirse Ronan in der Hauptrolle hervorragende Verfilmung gesehen hat), kommt auf mehr als seine Kosten. Das gleiche "Personal" zwanzig Jahre später. Eilis Lacey kehrt aus den USA zum 80. Geburtstag ihrer Mutter nach Irland zurück und trifft wieder auf Jim Farrell, mit dem sie damals (fast) ein Verhältnis hatte, obwohl sie in den USA bereits mit Tony verheiratet war. Wie der Autor nun die emotionalen Verstrickungen der Protagonisten schildert, aus denen man nicht einfach ausbrechen kann, ist umwerfend, und man zittert bis zum Schluss mit, wie sich Eilis und Jim schliesslich entscheiden (obwohl man es ahnen musste).
Empfehlung: auf englisch lesen. Tóibíns Sprache ist glasklar. "Man beschreibe Ungewöhnliches mit gewöhnlichen Worten".

In "Long Island" we meet Eilis, an irish woman married into an italian-american family 20 years ago. The story starts with a neighbour who tells Eilis, that her husband has fathered a child with his wife, and demands that they take care of the baby as soon as it's born. This of course leads Eilis to serious questions about her marriage, if she chose the right partner and what else she could do with her life. What might sound like a tragic romance novel is in fact very beautifully written literary fiction with impressive characters. I enjoyed this book very, very much.
