I've read the book in one setting, not because it's super short but because the story engaged me so much. It truly deserves to be shortlisted. More even: I would love the book to win The Booker Prize.

Everybody knows the story of Huckleberry Finn (most of us had to read it in school), but have you ever thought about Jim's perspective? In the tradition of Chinua Achebe, Jean Rhys or Aimé Césaire, Percival Everett gives the former voiceless slave from Mark Twains classic a story of his own. In typical Everett fashion, he does so with cynical humor as well as philosophical plot twists and characters you will want to punch in the face. But it's also holding up the mirror to our own internalized racism and challenges the prejudices everyone has within themselves. An important book, that also won the National Book Award for fiction 2024.
