Rebel Girl My Life as a Feminist Punk

Bikini Kill went upon stages and Kathleen Hanna, their frontwoman, very quickly got crowned The Rebel Queen and Posterwoman of the Riot Grrrl movement without much consent from her side. Riot Grrrl started out as a safe space for women in the punk and indie music/art scene in the 90s around Olympia, Washington to connect, inspire and learn from one another in a world full of patriarchal and set structures, first in written and zine form. When Tobi Vail, drummer of Bikini Kill (and almost drummer of Nirvana, just as a fun little side note), called one of her and Kathleens' zine Riot Grrrl the movement quickly became it's name and with one of their first songs "Rebel Queen" also the hymn of this female punk revolution. In her book Kathleen Hanna now tells her story in her own words after years of this massiv wave the Riot Grrrl shook awake. Starting from her heavy childhood to her discovery in finding freedom through music, all about Riot Grrrl and also how in hindside she can see all the aspects that at the time stayed rather hidden within it. Hanna writes about her photography, the punk and indie music scene in the 90s, her bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre and much more. I loved reading her memoir and getting a glimpse into her thoughts. It was thought provoking, authentic, emotional and very much inspiring to read about her way of shouting against sexism in the industry and society in such a bold way. Girls to the front always!!
