Slewfoot A Tale of Bewitchery

Slewfoot ist nicht nur die Geschichte einer Hexe, sondern erzählt auch von Identität, Selbstermächtigung und wie grausam gesellschaftliche Macht-Strukturen sein können. Das Setting in einem puritanischen US-Dorf im 17. Jahrhundert ist sehr bedrücken. Besonders weil wir der jungen Witwe Agitha bei ihrem Kampf um ihre persönliche Freiheit folgen. Auch die Fabelwesen sind komplex und nehmen eine zentrale Rolle ein. Die Suche nach Identität und wofür es sich einzustehen lohnt, müssen in diesem Werk nicht nur die menschlichen Protagonisten antreten. Wer eine dichte Atmosphäre und religiöse Themen in einem Folklore-Horror mag, ist mit dem Buch bestens bedient.

Slewfoot war für mich absolut nicht gruselig. Zeitweise blutig, ja; grausam, zu was Menschen in ihrem Irrglauben fähig sein können, ebenso. Aber Abitha hält sich tapfer, und man entwickelt eine große Sympathie für sie. Ebenfalls ein toller Charakter ist Samson, der an ihrer Seite bleibt und ihr hilft. Die Geschichte zeigt, wie es durch Aberglaube zu falschen Handlungen kommen kann, dass der christliche Glaube, Gott oder Engel nicht unbedingt das sind, was sie sein sollten - dass man nicht allen vertrauen kann. Und das es nicht verkehrt ist, an andere Götter zu glauben, vor allem, wenn das wilde Volk netter ist, als die Dorfbewohner. Ich fand die Geschichte super spannend und sehr interessant. Die einzigen Creeps waren die Puritaner.

Slewfoot is set in 1666 and follows the story of Abitha, a young woman living in a strict Puritan community. When her husband suddenly dies, her world begins to unravel and in the midst of her grief she encounters a strange, deer-like creature she initially believes to be the devil himself. What I really liked about this book is that it isn't just dark and creepy, although it wasn’t quite as creepy or horror-heavy as some reviews had made it sound. But what really stuck with me were the themes of freedom, courage, and reclaiming one’s own power. The real horror in this book doesn’t come from the strange, deer-like creatures or the other eerie elements, but from the actions of the people in Abitha’s community. The cruelty, judgment, and violence carried out in the name of God. In my opinion that is what makes the story so unsettling and powerful at the same time. If you’re into witchy stories, historical settings, and a touch of the mystical, this book is definitely for you.

Slewfoot by Brom is a gripping blend of historical horror and folklore that kept me hooked from start to finish. The story follows Abitha, a strong-willed woman struggling to find her voice in a harsh, unforgiving world. Brom’s writing flows smoothly, and the dark, atmospheric storytelling is enhanced by haunting illustrations. This book explores deep questions about faith, good and evil, and human cruelty without holding back on the horror. Highly recommended for anyone who loves intense, thoughtful horror with rich historical detail.

an incredible blend of folk horror (that feels more like a fairytale) and feminist fury. the super satisfying resolution makes this the perfect 'spooky season' book for me. i thoroughly enjoyed it
