Gelesen, geliebt, geheult, gefühlt, gesehen, (ge)empfohlen

Bewertungsnummer: 2419498

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

A super raw novel about love, discrimination and art. It made me feel a LOT. Most of all seen… as a person who also feels a lot and lives in their head, as a person who also was in a similar love-situation, this was just an amazing read. Simultaneously it shed light on the experience of POC in a white society! Written beautifully and so poetic. Even though i usually rush through books for the plot, i found myself taking my time with this, and savoring every sentence, every word and letter. Words aren’t enough, not for the author and not for me to describe the book. So raw, so important, so beautiful.

I fell in love with this book on the very first page and could not put it down - I read the novel in one sitting. Caleb Azumah Nelson's writing is so evocative it sounds like a love song, or a beautifully crafted poem. The journey follows a love story that tugs at your heartstrings and then takes a twist that cut my heart right open. It is not only a beautiful ode to Black love, joy, family, manhood, culture, music, identity and lifestyle but also deals with trauma, grief, fear, anxiety and racism in such a poignant and profound way that it left me crying and shaking. It touched me so deeply that it will probably stay with me for a long time. It is an absolute must-read and reading recommendation! To know that this is his debut novel leaves me in awe and makes me crave to read his next book even more. Absolutely stunning!

Most phenomenal and poetic piece of literature out there!

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Caleb Azumah Nelson writes like nobody else does. The story reads like poetry, smooth like honey. The pure intimacy and rawness shown on these pages were unlike anything I've ever read so far. A beautiful book with impeccable storytelling.

"Rather than asking what is your favourite work, let’s ask, what continues to pull you back?”

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

"Open Water" by the British-Ghanaian author Caleb Azumah Nelson left me speechless - my only 5-star read of 2023 and one of the few books I've read multiple times. It tells the love story of two aspiring artists living in London, but it is so much more than a classic novel about romance. Written in beautiful, almost poetic prose we get to know the male protagonist and the hardships he has to face - from everyday racism to family struggles and, of course, his slowly unfolding romantic relationship. A book that covers many important issues, but does so in a way that is subtle but nevertheless makes you think about it even weeks after you've read it. I absolutely adored the way Nelson created that male character who shows us all his emotions, challenging the frequent misconception that "boys don't cry". All in all, an amazing book that is going to accompany me for many more years to come, whenever I feel the need to loose myself in the alluring words of Caleb Azumah Nelson. “Besides, sometimes, to resolve desire, it's better to let the thing bloom. To feel this thing, to let it catch you unaware, to hold onto the ache. What is better than believing you are heading towards love?”
