Rezension

A fascinating, enthusiastic narrative on the loaded language of cults. - Kirkus Reviews

"A rigorous and fascinating examination of the power of language to spellbind us all. Montell's command over cultish language makes her as mesmerizing and charismatic as the gurus she dissects." - Molly Ringwald, actress and author of When It Happens to You

"You will never think of cults the same way again-this is an unforgettable look at human nature and the power of language. I couldn't put it down. Amanda Montell blends true journalistic sorcery with her trademark humor and intrepid curiosity to create a linguistic narrative so delicious and searingly smart, you will wonder, like I did, can we join her cult? If so, count me in as a follower for life. I'll read anything this woman writes." - Chelsea Bieker, author of Godshot

"Whip-smart, engaging, and utterly intriguing. Cultish is a witty and thorough examination of power, community, words, and the junctures between them." - Alexis Henderson, author of The Year of the Witching

"A playful but canny exploration of the ways language can entrance and beguile us-sometimes past the point of no return." - Elisabeth Thomas, author of Catherine House

"One of those life-changing reads that makes you see- or, in this case, hear-the whole world differently." - Megan Angelo, author of Followers

"Compulsively readable and startlingly of-the-moment, this witty, slick, and self-assured book is as intriguing as the spellbinding groups it examines." - Andrea Bartz, author of The Lost Night and The Herd

"At times chilling, often funny, and always perceptive and cogent, Cultish is a bracing reminder that the scariest thing about cults is that you don't realize you're in one till it's too late." - Refinery29.com

"We're all susceptible to coercion, and Montell's phenomenal book that chilling point as clear as can be." - Bitch Magazine

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Come for the morbid fascination, stay for the valuable insights

I’ve been flirting with this book for quite a while before I finally committed to buying it. Not just because cults and conspiracies and the mindset behind it have an unending fasciation to me, but also simply because the cover is stunning (A+ to the designer). I’m glad I finally caved! It’s a very fun - if slightly disturbing - ride through a number of different organizations and groups that engage in cultish language. The writing is very fluent and engaging, and I’ve had general trouble putting it down at times. The individual chapters feel like episodes on a podcast, each dipping into a different area, group or organization, so it never gets too repetitive. The overarching focus is on the linguistic similarities that they all share with each other, like creation of insider language, slang and an emphasis on broad, general statements. And this is where the long-lasting value of the book comes from, in my opinion. Because while it is of course very entertaining to read about what some specific cults and cult-adjacent groups were/are up to, these concepts are what stick with you long after you’ve forgotten the details. Cultish language patterns are ever present in our everyday lives, especially on social media, and recognizing them for what they are is a valuable skill to have.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    This was a delight!

Rarely do I take this much out of a book that I can apply in everyday life. Language on its own is thrilling to me but Amanda Montell opened up a whole new perspective on how language can be used to manipulate and exclude/include. Yes, scientology was a topic - but so was Tupperware! And Taylor Swift. Everybody comes in contact with cults, whether with full awareness or not, as company CULTure could not exist without cult as well. All in all, a fun and informative read which is proven by facts.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    Fascinating and addicting!

What an interesting read! Language and rhetoric are very important tools in today’s society, especially for the feelings of togetherness and belonging. The author takes us on a journey to all the places where language plays a huge role and is often used to lure people in. Combined with the urge to feel accepted this often becomes the ideal breeding ground for fanaticism and clutish behaviour. Such a fascinating story to follow. I highly recommend!

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    Interesting read

This reads incredibly easy for a non-fiction book, it took me about three days to finish which really says something. I learned a lot about different cults and how they operate and manipulate their members. I find this topic incredibly interesting and it was well-researched and well-written. The only small criticism I have, is that I really wanted this book to be more about the language and linguistics than the cults themselves.
