Persuasion

In today’s day and age, we (especially women) are being bombarded with books and movies full of strong female characters that exhibit a lot of independence and bravery. However, not all women want nor can identify with this modern idealized archetype. For that reason, reading a novel by Jane Austen is a welcomed change. In “Persuasion”, Anne Elliot embodies a highly empathic and sensitive woman who carries her abundant emotional microcosm hidden from the external world. Anne is introverted and placed her own needs and desires second when she let her father persuade her not to marry the man, she truly loved years prior to the storyline. When he reappears in her life, the question arises whether their love can receive a second chance. Secondly of course, whether Anne is at last able to respect her wishes instead of constantly meeting the needs of others in her life at the cost of her own happiness.

Persuasion (auf Deutsch "Überredung") ist ohne Zweifel eine der romantischsten Geschichten, die Jane Austen geschrieben hat. (Wer Mr. Darcy bereits verfallen ist, dem wird auch Captain Wentworth zusagen.) Doch vielmehr sieht man auch in diesem Werk, die für die Entstehungszeit fortschrittliche und feministische Weltansicht der Autorin und ist konstant begeistert von dem exzellenten Schreibstil und dem einzigartigen Humor. Second Chance Romance at its best! Anne Elliot ist eine wunderbare Protagonistin und man verfällt ihrer Geschichte gerne.

The first 100 pages have a very slow pace, then the story evolves so quickly that I couldn't stop reading. I really liked the story. First of all I liked that both main characters have the same age and their love survived and got a second chance. I loved the maturity of whole story and of course Anne Elliot and the evolution of her character. At the end of the story she knows what she wants. I am really happy I read this book, because it resonated a lot with my outlook on life at the moment.

Ein Austen-Roman, der oft unterschätzt oder gar ganz vergessen wird – absolut zu unrecht. Geschrieben mit unerbittlichem Scharfsinn, Witz und einer Schlagfertigkeit, die man, wäre Jane Austen nicht so unglaublich elegant, fast frech nennen könnte. Anne Elliot – besonnen, intelligent und pragmatisch – ist eine Heldin, die wenig sagt, sich viel dazu denkt und der nichts entgeht. Die Geschichte dreht sich um das vielen gut bekannte Phänomen, einer Person wiederzubegegnen, die einem früher teuer war, heute aber entfremdet ist. Ich bin immer wieder beeindruckt, wie gut es Austen gelingt, solch alltägliche Situationen so greif- und nachvollziehbar zu beschreiben. Selbstverständlich sind nicht nur Geschichte und Schreibstil vortrefflich, neben Anne finden sich in diesem Buch nämlich gleich mehrere tolle Frauenfiguren: Mrs. Croft, Mrs. Smith, ja sogar Mrs. Clay. Aber auch Captain Wentworth glänzt dank der Verzweiflung, die die Liebe so mit sich bringt. Besonders gut gefällt mir, dass Anne nicht wie so viele andere Frauenfiguren von falscher Bescheidenheit verkrüppelt wird. Obschon verunsichert, wegen dem unangenehmen Wiedersehen mit Captain Wentworth, ist sie gegenüber ihrer Wirkung auf ihn nicht blind. Sie kennt ihren Wert und vertraut ihrer Wahrnehmung. Keine Kritik, nur Lob. Ein absolutes Muss, vor allem für diejenigen, die Stolz und Vorurteil gemocht haben.

A very good edition of Persuasion, with several additional articles as appendices explaining historical context and relevant issues to the time the novel was written. A good edition for literature students!
