Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

A dark story about mermaids. With a science take on the lore and myth of the so called sirens this book is never boring. With some body horror and multiple povs its fast past and feels like a movie. Gory, dense and perfect.

Interesting idea, but lengthy

The idea is very good, but the book itself is very stretched. If the author had avoided to express relationships and side stories between the real story items she could have done it on half the pages. The descriptions and explanations are often very long and could have been avoided or summarized in another chapter in advance to not break the flow of reading. Also the underlying science is carved out sometimes excessively, which add some more sides to the book. I like hard fiction, but here it reads sometimes like a science book for education. ***Spoiler*** While I have been serving in the navy, I would expect that all seafaring ships, especially the ones constructed for expeditions and long distance trips, have manually operated bulkheads that can be sealed. In the book the automated mechanism to shut the "doors" to the outside is failing and allowing the mermaids to enter the ship. In reality, with hours to prepare, each captain would order to block the bulkheads, I think.

Can you hear the siren call?

Bewertet: eBook (ePUB)

A novel about mermaids and the scientific quest to find them. Completely fictional, but written with so much actual oceanic science, it starts to feel real at the end of the book. It's also a longer read, but gripping and thrilling, venturing into horror-movie-territory with science speak. Everytime, I thought the story couldn't bring any more new findings or surprises, it kept delivering. It's filled to the brim with well fleshed-out characters, clashing relationships and motives and of course scary mermaids, who might be the biggest threat but not the only one. The ending is good but feels almost a bit abrupt, after all the build-up and exploration of the story.
