You are not too much. You never were. You were just in rooms that were too small.
It is 2014, and Ammanuel Santa Anna is gripping the steering wheel in a Whole Foods parking lot in Atlanta. His business partner has asked, by text, to push their call to tomorrow. In under five seconds his mind travels from that ordinary request to the end of the business and a lonely death in the same parking lot. Then he notices an interesting cloud, forgets the whole thing for twenty minutes, and goes inside to buy cashew butter.
That is rejection sensitive dysphoria as many people with ADHD know it: fast, physical, far out of scale with the trigger, and sometimes gone as suddenly as it came. The book calls it the lightning, and says plainly that it is not a formal diagnosis. The research around it is steadier. A 2014 review by Shaw and colleagues found emotional dysregulation common in ADHD at every age, and Kristin Neff's account of self-compassion, from 2003, shapes the way the book rewrites the old story that says you take up too much room.
It is short, and each part opens on an ordinary hour: a Thursday of hyperfocus, a Sunday night replaying a sister's remark, 8:50 on a Monday before a review. It has you write your strengths down before it maps where the lightning strikes. Then the inner story, the body, and a daily rhythm for a mind that forgets for three weeks and comes back. The practice at its centre takes two minutes: a hand flat on the chest, a long breath out, a slow count to ninety, and one sentence, "This is a storm passing through, and I'm under a roof."
The author has ADHD and RSD, founded Luminous Prosperity, and has spent most of a decade coaching people who live with both. The client stories are composites, and say so. Near the end he sets out, in one place, what the research supports and what is his own practice, and that none of his practices has been tested in a trial for RSD. Field Notes and The Tide Table carry the written work further.
"The work was never to make that heart smaller. It was to build a house big enough for it."
It describes a pattern and the practices that help with it. It is not a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified clinician.
