What emerges when Turquoise has been fully lived?
When the great holistic vision has been achieved and
yet consciousness continues to develop? What happens when the Self-Transforming Mind has fully
transformed when the capacity to hold and revise one's own meaning-making systems has been achieved
and yet the developmental impulse presses toward something the current structures cannot contain?
The answer, I believe, involves two intimately related developments.
The first is Coral proposed as the first stage of what Spiral Dynamics theorists call the Third Tier.
Graves himself never closed his system; he described it as open-ended, with each new level arising as human
existential problems change, and his notes sketch a second cycle of levels beyond the ones he could study
(Graves, 1970, 2005). Beck and Cowan (1996) named Coral as the color that might come next and left it largely
undescribed. What I propose in these pages is not more holism, and not better systems thinking. It is
something qualitatively different: a mode of perception and participation in which the unity Turquoise feels
becomes the ground from which a person creates.
Turquoise feels the unity. Coral creates from it.
The second is Order 5.5 the half-order that names the territory between Kegan's Fifth Order and
whatever lies beyond it. I use the designation "5.5" deliberately, as an act of humility. Kegan's own research
found the Fifth Order rare and seldom seen before midlife (Kegan, 1994). We are not ready to name a Sixth
Order. But we can begin to describe the transitional space the developmental movement that may be
underway, even now, in people who have fully grown into Fifth-Order capacity and find themselves reaching
toward something more. Susanne Cook-Greuter's careful work on the Construct-Aware and Unitive stages of
ego development gives us the nearest empirical handhold for this territory (Cook-Greuter, 1999, 2000), and I
lean on it gratefully throughout.
Let me be clear about one thing at the outset: I am not claiming to write from Coral consciousness, or
from Order 5.5. No one in this book is said to have "arrived" there, and you will not be invited to decide
whether you have. These are maps of a frontier, drawn by someone who has stood at its edge and listened.
Treat them as you would any early map of unfamiliar country: with interest, with gratitude, and with a pencil
in hand for corrections.
