Every protection ordinary people have ever had against the powerful has rested on one quiet fact: the powerful needed them. The strike worked because factories needed workers. The vote mattered because states needed taxpayers. And when a government turned its guns on its own people, the last check was the soldier who would not fire.
What happens when none of them is needed?
The Hollow Nation is the third and final book in Ian Kano's trilogy on AI, robotics and the end of human necessity. The Unneeded showed why machines may soon do most of the work. The Implosion followed what happens to money, homes and the state. This book follows the last two pillars of a modern society: citizens as the source of soldiers and police, and work as the source of identity and belonging.
Drawing on the record of revolutions from Leipzig to Khartoum, drone wars from Ukraine to Myanmar, the history of emergency powers, and models built on real data, it shows that:
- The protection goes before the people do. The power to refuse weakens years before soldiers and police are replaced, while headcount hides the fall.
- Cheap machines change who can fight. Drones costing a few thousand dollars are met by missiles costing millions, and a single person can now do harm that once took an army.
- The same machines produce different nations. Followed through three imagined countries, one technological shock leads to three futures, and what divides them is not the machines but what each country decides, and when.
Told through Daniel, who was sixteen when the work began to go, the book asks what keeps power accountable when force no longer needs consent, who will own what machines find first on the Moon and the deep seabed, and what is left that is national when a country no longer needs its people.
It ends with five decisions that must be made while people are still needed, and with the question behind them all: once a nation no longer needs its people as its means, will it still treat them as its purpose?
