A faded green notebook opens onto a private world of secret words, coloured ceremonies and forbidden knowledge. Framed by a searching dialogue between Ambrose and Cotgrave, the unnamed girl's manuscript records experiences that resist ordinary education and material explanation, drawing childhood perception into unsettling contact with sorcery, sanctity and spiritual evil. Her childlike, repetitive voice makes the familiar increasingly strange. Stories and charms inherited through her nurse mingle with games, rituals and an invented occult vocabulary whose meanings remain tantalisingly uncertain. Beyond the girl's home, woods, streams, hills, wells and thickets become places of initiation, while a secluded valley and wood acquire the force of uncanny ritual spaces. Fairy-tale motifs persist, yet their innocence is continually disturbed by secrecy and the perilous pursuit of occult knowledge. This Gothic short story gains its distinctive power from the tension between the frame narrative's philosophical enquiry and the notebook's intimate testimony. Dream and reality remain difficult to separate; inherited traditions seem both playful and dangerous; and the girl's limited understanding leaves each revelation suspended between wonder and dread. Rather than explaining its mysteries, the narrative lets language, landscape and ceremony deepen them, creating supernatural fiction shaped by suggestion and uncertainty. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
