A few years ago, the British newspaper The Guardian invited me to present my book The Art of Thinking Clearly, which had just been translated into English. The editor-in-chief, Alan Rusbridger, gathered the editorial team, and the room was packed. Rusbridger cleared his throat and said sternly, "I've just visited your website and discovered a rather controversial article you've written. We'd like you to talk about that, not your new book."
I swallowed hard. In that article, I had presented arguments against the "consumption" of what the newspaper's internationally renowned professionals produced every day: the news. I was trying to explain why we could live better lives without this incredibly popular product.
For about twenty minutes, I elaborated on the position I had expressed in the article and concluded: "Let's face it, ladies and gentlemen, what you essentially produce here is entertainment."
Silence. You could have heard a pin drop.
Rusbridger narrowed his eyes, looked around the room and said, "I want us to publish Dobelli's arguments. Today."
Then he turned on his heel and left the room without saying goodbye.
Four hours later, an abridged version of my article appeared on The Guardian's website. Within a short time, 450 readers-the maximum number technically permitted-had posted comments. Paradoxically, the article, entitled "News Is Bad for You," turned out to be one of the most widely read articles of the year.
The book you are holding in your hands is based on that "controversial" article, but it contains much more: additional research into the effects news has on us, as well as more advice on how to break free from our addiction to it.
The digital revolution has transformed news from a harmless form of entertainment into a weapon of mass destruction against common sense.
One thing seems particularly important to me: reducing our consumption of news does not mean becoming bitter or giving up. On the contrary, it brings many rewards: more free time and a fresh perspective on the things that truly matter and make us happy.
