A small book that accompanies the display of Johannes Vermeer's Milkmaid at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon and focuses on the history and meaning of the painting, as well as Vermeer as an artist.
In this painting, dating from ca. 1660, a maidservant pours milk and is entirely absorbed in her work. Except for the stream of milk, everything else is still. Vermeer takes this simple everyday activity and makes it the subject of an impressive painting - the woman stands like a statue in the brightly lit room.
The essay by Xavier F. Salomon, generously illustrated with color plates and details of The Milkmaid--including the finer points that highlight the importance of the details in this composition, which make it so special--alongside a selection comparative and contextual illustrations, including other works by Vermeer. He discusses the wider significance of this painting and what it says both about Vermeer's practise as an artist, his fastidiousness in capturing every detail of a particular moment, and the effects of light through small painted dots applied to everyday objects, and about wider seventeenth-century Dutch painting's penchant for revealing the everyday lives of ordinary people and making them seem very real.
