Cranford was originally serialized in Charles Dickens's magazine, Household Words, in the early 1850s. It is a gently satirical, yet affectionate episodic novel about a fictional English country town, modeled on the author's own childhood home of Knutsford. The story centers on a close-knit society of aging spinsters and widows who govern their quiet community with strict, unspoken social codes. The narrative focuses on character-driven vignettes, capturing the humor, the struggles and the friendships that sustain these women as the looming Industrial Revolution threatens their traditional way of life. The author, Elizabeth Gaskell, was a major figure of Victorian literature whose wider body of work frequently tackled profound social and class disparities. Living in Manchester as the wife of a Unitarian minister, she witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of the working class, channeling these observations into her works, North and South, and the especially popular, Mary Barton. She is also renowned for writing the first, highly influential biography of her close friend Charlotte Brontë.
