A Volunteer Poilu is a firsthand account of Henry Beston's experiences as an American volunteer in the French army during World War I. The term "Poilu" refers to French infantry soldiers, particularly those who fought on the front lines. Beston, inspired by a sense of duty and a desire to contribute to the war effort against the Central Powers, offers a personal narrative that captures both the heroism and the horrors of war. The book begins with Beston's arrival in France, detailing his motivations for joining the war effort and the initial excitement of being part of a noble cause. He describes the atmosphere in France during the war, including the resilience and camaraderie of the French people and soldiers. Beston paints vivid pictures of the landscapes and towns affected by the conflict, illustrating both the beauty of the country and the devastation wrought by war.
