"I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man."
A retired clerk of forty sits in a rented room in St. Petersburg, living off a small inheritance, and sets out to explain himself to readers he insists he will never have. He has opinions about everything and has done nothing with any of them. He despises the men who act without thinking - and he envies them past bearing.
Reason, he argues, will never be enough. A man will choose his own ruin over his own advantage for the pleasure of proving he is not a piano key. Then, in the second half of his notes, he tells the story of the winter night he proved it: a humiliating dinner with old schoolfellows, a drive through the wet snow, and a young woman who made the mistake of believing what he told her.
First published in 1864, this is the book in which Dostoevsky found the voice that would carry his great novels - and the one that would not let the century that followed alone.
