How legal aid and race have collectively shaped a nation Whose rights get enforced? The answer has often depended on access to legal help. In Many Hands for Justice, Shaun Ossei-Owusu recovers a largely untold history of legal aid and reveals how it helped shape American society. Legal aid is often considered just a safety net for the poor, but it has a rich history that stretches back to the nation's founding and is tied to struggles for racial equality. The story begins with Black and white abolitionist organizations. Their legal assistance helped free and enslaved people claim the law's protections. Post-Civil War immigration subsequently fueled the growth of legal aid societies. Much of their innovative work centered on poor southern and eastern Europeans who were not yet fully accepted as white and faced discrimination as they searched for a foothold in a new country. As immigration restrictions tightened and racial exclusion intensified, legal aid expanded. Chinese immigrants and Mexican Americans pooled resources to build institutions that defended their communities, while Native Americans organized to defend their lands and treaty rights. By the 1960s, a new generation of advocates-white, Latino/a, Black, Asian, and Native American-brought legal aid to urban and rural communities. They attacked poverty and animated newly secured civil rights. That work continues, as legal aid remains crucial for people on the margins confronting the state, employers, landlords, and other institutions. Many Hands for Justice shows how an overlooked institution shaped American social policy and the nation itself.
