Enter the fascinating world of collectors, booksellers, auctions, rare books, coins, art, and the irresistible pursuit of hidden treasures. In The Confessions of a Collector, William Carew Hazlitt offers an intimate and entertaining account of the passions, discoveries, disappointments, and pleasures that lie behind the world of collecting. Beginning with his early development as a bibliophile, Hazlitt takes readers into the remarkable history and culture of collecting, introducing some of the great names who shaped the world of rare books and bibliography. The journey moves through the lives and influence of celebrated collectors such as Richard Heber and Henry Huth, the rarebook trade, booksellers, auction rooms, bargains, and the exciting hunt for literary treasures. Hazlitt reveals why the search for an unusual or forgotten book can become far more than a hobby-it can become a lifelong passion. But books are only the beginning. The narrative expands into the collecting of old china, stamps, pictures, silver, and coins, offering a broader look at the psychology and art of collecting. His experiences in numismatics explore dealers, coin sales, selective collecting, condition, value, and the fascinating human stories that can exist behind seemingly small objects. For collectors and general readers alike, the book provides insight into the excitement of discovery, the importance of knowledge, and the judgment required to recognize genuine treasures. It also captures the personalities, traditions, and changing marketplace that surround collecting. Perfect for readers interested in rare books, bibliography, antiques, numismatics, coins, auctions, bookselling, art collecting, and cultural history. Hazlitt's reflections reveal why collectors search, what they value, and how ordinary objects can acquire extraordinary meaning through history, craftsmanship, rarity, and human connection.
