Leviathan, Volume 2 of 2, continues Thomas Hobbes's complete four-part work at its original Part III boundary. This hardcover contains Parts III and IV, Chapters XXXII-XLVII, and "A Review, and Conclusion," ending with FINIS. The dedication, Introduction, and Parts I-II are in Volume 1. The division follows Hobbes's own part structure while making the unabridged reading text feasible as two Standard large-print case-bound books.
The later parts ask how civil sovereignty relates to Christian scripture, prophecy, the meaning of a church, and spiritual authority. Part IV examines what Hobbes calls the "Kingdome of Darknesse," including interpretive errors and institutions that in his account draw power away from civil peace. Chapter XLVII was tagged as an HTML subheading in the selected electronic witness, but its own numbered label shows it is a chapter; this edition restores that chapter-level place in the Contents and reading sequence.
The ending matters. Hobbes does not stop at the last numbered chapter: the Review and Conclusion returns to questions of law, obedience, and the purpose of the argument. This volume retains that final section and FINIS, so the complete selected work ends where the source ends. The printed Contents and subordinate labels offer finding points in a dense philosophical text without changing the order of its reasoning.
This Standard Large Print Edition is a 7-by-10-inch case-laminate hardcover. The body is set in 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next with 27-point line spacing. Ragged-right setting avoids stretched gaps between words, and the text is not divided at line endings. Generous margins leave room for a bound page to be held and read. These are specific print design choices, not a claim of WCAG conformance for a fixed-layout hardcover. The source text is printed in black and white; the selected Project Gutenberg HTML witness has no embedded illustration.
The new Lagniappe places the work beside the English De Cive, published in 1651 from a work first issued in Latin in 1642. Its first-edition bibliographic record provides a related historical perspective on Hobbes's earlier treatment of civil society. The companion is original publisher commentary, not an inserted excerpt or a claim that Parts III-IV were issued by Hobbes as an independent book.
For library and classroom selection, this ISBN identifies the concluding Standard hardcover volume of the complete Leviathan. It is designed to be paired with Volume 1 for the dedication, Introduction, and Parts I-II. The selected reading witness is Project Gutenberg eBook 3207, prepared electronically from a Pelican Classics text based on the 1651 first edition. This book does not claim to be a facsimile or to reproduce the historical Harvard Classics copytext.
The exterior cover reproduces a 1651 frontispiece attributed to Abraham Bosse in collaboration with Hobbes, from a British Library digitization released under CC0. That image is independently sourced for the exterior; it is not an image embedded in the Project Gutenberg reading witness. The source note identifies the electronic transcription and explains why the original linked Contents is replaced by the generated print Contents. The two-volume edition keeps the work's original sequence, including the converted marginal labels and, in Volume 1, the hierarchical science chart.
