Children hear the names of the Hindu holy books all the time, at home, at the temple, during festivals, and rarely learn how those names fit together. Is the Ramayana a Veda? Who wrote the Upanishads? Why eighteen Puranas and not one? This book answers those questions for young readers, one shelf at a time.
It treats the Hindu scriptures as a single library with three shelves. Shruti holds what was heard and passed down by memory: the four Vedas and the Upanishads. Smriti holds what was written down afterward to explain and apply that older knowledge: the epics, the Puranas, the law books, the schools of philosophy. Agama holds the guidebooks used in temple worship. From there, the book moves chapter by chapter through all of it, from the Rigveda to the Bhagavad Gita to the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva.
Each of the 24 chapters opens with a library card giving the text's name, how to say it, what it means, and which shelf it sits on. Each one ends with questions, answered at the back, so a child can check what stuck. More than 80 drawings, maps and diagrams show how the pieces connect, and a glossary of about 170 words covers the Sanskrit terms along the way.
The author wrote this after looking for a book that laid out the Hindu scriptures for her own children and not finding one. She has tried to keep every fact accurate, to say plainly when something is a belief or a traditional story rather than a settled date, and to be honest with children about the parts of these old texts that people still disagree about.
What is inside:
- 24 short chapters, each with a library card
- More than 80 pictures, maps and diagrams
- Questions after every chapter, with answers
- A glossary of about 170 words
Read start to finish or kept on a shelf for one chapter at a time, this book gives children a way to hold these names together, instead of meeting each one alone.
